Here is my first box-building project.
My sheet of 3/4 MDF. 96x46, set me back $22 at Home Depot. Also, I got two bottles of liquid nails, a box of 1 5/8 drywall screws, and 10 feet of 14Ga paired speaker wire. Total cost: $36.
All of my lines drawn out for my planned box. I used a sheet of foamboard as a square.
My cutting table
No, those are not moms chairs for the dinner table. In the background is my Escort.
Note how I use a 50lb bag of salt to keep the wood from vibrating. Notice the handy Skil-Saw in the lower left corner. That will do all but the speaker/vent hole.
Cutting out the sides and the port pieces on a table I was too lazy to dig up before.
Pieces that are cut and ready!
Hmm, test fitting the port... something didn't come out right! The side came up short too. I goofed on my original plans, but changed and recalculated.
Having made and drawn out my corrections, I am going to cut new vent pieces and side panels.
And the first piece is in place. I predrilled two screws and then undid them to apply liquid nails. then I'd tighten down the panel with the two nails. After ensuring 150% correct fit, I'dd drill more holes and screw in more nails. (notice the 'stang... mom got home early)
shot of a corner and how I sealed it.
A view of the back. Gotta love my uneven spacing.
And here we are, two sides, a port, and the bottom in place!
Now for more of the story...
Originally, I had planned for two ports, one on either side, and a 36hz tuning. But after screwing up my port pieces, I redesigned it to a single port.
Dimensions are as follows:
Port: 10.5x2x29.5
Port Displacement: 75.75cu in
Outer box dimensions: 30x12x14.5
Est. Speaker Displacement: .1 cu ft
Box Volume (after displacements: 3393.15 cu in, or 1.9636 cu ft
if my calculations are correct, it tunes to 29.41hz
Tomorrow I will finish the box and install it. Then I'll put up some petite amateur excursion ****. Here's hopin my crappo subs like it!
What do you guys think of my first box-attempt?
