Here is my first box-building project.

My sheet of 3/4 MDF. 96x46, set me back $22 at Home Depot. Also, I got two bottles of liquid nails, a box of 1 5/8 drywall screws, and 10 feet of 14Ga paired speaker wire. Total cost: $36.

All of my lines drawn out for my planned box. I used a sheet of foamboard as a square.

My cutting table :p No, those are not moms chairs for the dinner table. In the background is my Escort.

Note how I use a 50lb bag of salt to keep the wood from vibrating. Notice the handy Skil-Saw in the lower left corner. That will do all but the speaker/vent hole.

Cutting out the sides and the port pieces on a table I was too lazy to dig up before.

Pieces that are cut and ready!

Hmm, test fitting the port... something didn't come out right! The side came up short too. I goofed on my original plans, but changed and recalculated.

Having made and drawn out my corrections, I am going to cut new vent pieces and side panels.

And the first piece is in place. I predrilled two screws and then undid them to apply liquid nails. then I'd tighten down the panel with the two nails. After ensuring 150% correct fit, I'dd drill more holes and screw in more nails. (notice the 'stang... mom got home early)

A view of the back. Gotta love my uneven spacing.

And here we are, two sides, a port, and the bottom in place!

Now for more of the story...

Originally, I had planned for two ports, one on either side, and a 36hz tuning. But after screwing up my port pieces, I redesigned it to a single port.

Dimensions are as follows:

Port: 10.5x2x29.5

Port Displacement: 75.75cu in

Outer box dimensions: 30x12x14.5

Est. Speaker Displacement: .1 cu ft

Box Volume (after displacements: 3393.15 cu in, or 1.9636 cu ft

if my calculations are correct, it tunes to 29.41hz

Tomorrow I will finish the box and install it. Then I'll put up some petite amateur excursion ****. Here's hopin my crappo subs like it!

What do you guys think of my first box-attempt?

wow those DUAL'S (if thats what you are usin) will be happy. Blow the subs if you can!j/k

Yes yes, I know they aren't the best. And at the power they are getting... I don't think I can even come close to blowing them.

75w rms x2 @ 4 ohm

Will have more pics later today.

Here is the final product, about 8-hours worth of work. The final setup has the subs facing the front of the car and the amp on the back of the seat. I have a grainy excursion video, but no webspace to host it.

I'm still in the process of tuning the amp, but so far it sounds good!

Most people like having it facing the trunk.. they say it sounds better. I'd paint that thing or carpet it though. Looks really nice how it is, just work on the wireing //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

nice box...those subs don't deserve a home like that though, it calls for something better //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Soon I'll get some RE products in a better box. This was a learning "test box"

My final setup has the subs facing the cabin. I mounted the amp on the back of one of the seats, and wired it from there. I usually drive around with the back seat down (it takes a couple seconds to flip it open or close it) and it sounds pretty good.

I had some leaks around the speaker mounting screws (go figure) but sealed those already. I put it to the test today, and it sounds very good! (relative to the old bandpass)

I have it crossed-over at about 60hz, and if my math was correct, it goes as low as ~30 hz. It may not be much of a range... but I really don't want to overstress those poor little cheapies.

The lower bass, compared to the bandpass, is wonderful! The intro to Rammstein's Feuer Frei is absolutely killer now!

When I get off my lazy *** I'll burn a cd with bass test-tones and see if it does peak at 29-30hz, like I designed.
