Newbie ! please help with distortion !

ok i am fairly new to doing audio installs myself, other than installing head units . My first steps are going to be primarily for bass. I am on a limited budget but wanted to try to get quality pieces so here is what i started with, i got a 600 total watt (bridged) JVC amp on sale for 50 dollars, then picked up a new Sony Xplod 12 for 60 dollars. i am very pleased with the performance with one exception, the speaker is rated at 350 watts RMS and 1200 watt peak and is in a sealed box. My problem is that if i turn my amp past half way i get distortion in the speaker. i am new and not sure how to adjust my amp for sure. is this a tuning problem or is this amp strong enough to overpower this speaker ? turn the gain and bass boost down and then slowly adjust it till you are satisfied. blah blah

which should i start adjusting first ? bass boost or gain ? and where should the main power be to start with ? sorry know this sounds ground level but never adjusted an amp before and this speaker has tons of bass already and think it has more potential ! Thanks !
