Newbie, looking for advice for head unit with DSP for pickup truck

Hey all,

First time poster here. Please be gentle.

I have a pickup truck with a Kenwood deck, my front speakers are some Alpines that I don't have the model info in front of me, but they cost about 300.00 and they're the type that have the crossovers and my tweeters are up front by the windshield (what are they called again??) Having a brain cramp.

And I also have a 5 channel amp with a small subwoofer under the seats in the back. The rear speakers are probably something generic since they really don't even come into play.

Now that I've bored you with all that, I'm looking to upgrade my system. I don't think upgrading my front speakers are going to do much. It's just too difficult to listen to some speakers and try to pretend what they might sound like in my truck. I've listened to some top line Focal speakers, but it was in the middle of a show room, so I can't compare those to mine, and I wasn't even impressed at all.

What I've been thinking is that I'd like to upgrade my deck instead. Being confined in a pickup truck doesn't allow for much dynamics. Are there any decks that have some cool DSP features that would widen the sound? I'd love to have a 'airy' sound rather than the boxy sound I have now. My deck has some options, but you really can't tell the difference in a truck. Are there decks that have great DSP options? Or does anyone have any other speaker upgrade options that I might want to try?

Thanks for listening to all this crap //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Hi DB,

Thanks for the quick response. As I mentioned, I'm new to all this, so I'll have to ask you a few questions before I can answer.

Believe me though, I catch on quickly //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Running active?? Is this something technical or maybe a lifestyle? Not sure how to answer this.

As far as door treatments.....not sure here either. My doors have not been treated, should they?

I just called the shop that installed all my hardware so I can get a better list of what I currently have installed.

Please keep throwing questions at me cause I learn at the same time!

I'll have more info shortly.

Dan

Active is a type of crossover. You have components that have a factory passive crossover. One amp channel is split between the woofer and tweeter using the passive crossover. This works well for speakers in a sound board but not the best for vehicles. Active removes the passive crossover and runs each tweeter and woofer with its own amp channel. You then have the ability to control (actively) the crossover for each individual speaker. There are a lot of ways to do this, active capable hu or amplifier and an external dsp are the more popular. I prefer the hu as you can adjust from you listening position. You will also now be able to use individual time alignment. Door treatments are important for cleaning up the sound from the mid and helping improve midbass. At a minimum sound deaden the doors inner and outer panels.

if u don't like speakers try cdt like $129 guy on here has company sells them, pretty nice looking, polks are like $79 ebay, depending on which alpine they normally pretty good..
