New, used car what oil?

So Wednesday I pickup my new car a 1994 capri that has 200k on it.

Before I even start it I will be changing the oil.

What should I use?

I put Mobil 1 in mine, but I wouldn't in a car with 200k...

I ran my 99 Grand Prix GT for 5 years with Mobil 1 full synthetic. Had 187K on the clock when I got rid of it and not a single issue, no burning, no leaking, no knocking, nothing.

Its generally not a good idea to switch up types of oil being used. Synthetic oil will definately reveal leaks over dyno juice that you never knew the car had.

There's a difference between running synthetic for five years before hitting 187k, and just beginning to put it in a car when it has 200k on the odo.

With 200k on the odometer, I would't put full synthetic in it unless it was running full synthetic before. If the car have always used conventional, then that's what I would go with. At 200k, I don't think full synthetic is going to help much and you'll just be wasting your money.

I wouldnt run synthetic in it with that many miles and not being the original owner, it'll be a waste of money. Any decent 10w-30 will be perfectly fine. I usaully use Catrol.

personally, I'd do the first oil change with regular motor oil. also do the basics like change spark plugs and correctly gap, change all belts and PCV and air filter, also do a nice cleaning of the engine bay. once you do that make sure that the engine runs and sounds fine and locate leaks (especially exhaust leaks) if any. run it like that for 200-500 miles than do another oil change. at this oil change I'd either do a good high mileage oil or a semi-synthetic oil.

My dad and I have had great results using Quaker State High Mileage on our trucks. His old one has 315k on it, and his current one has 230k...mines running great with 132k.

I would seafoam it then go with the synthetic
