Lots and lots of research and testing is your best teacher...

Some basics can be understood by plugging numbers into a more simple program like WinISD or the L-Port Box program (search google).

In general, tuning around 28hz or around Fs will give you a pretty flat response.

Port tuning will give you a peak that is also affected by cabin gain. Cabin gain moves your tuning up.

QTS helps you determine if a sub is more suitable for ported or sealed enclosures, amongst other specs.
