Hey all,
I was hoping to get some advice on car stereos from you guys. Here is the situation:
I have two cars, both with noisy interiors, a 1994 Ford Aspire (relatively noisy) and a 12 Volt Trabant 601 (very noisy).
I have a really (I mean REALLY) crappy system in my Trabant that I'd like to upgrade. I don't want anything fancy at all in there as 1) the car is so noisy that musical subtalties will all be lost and 2) I don't want to tempt anyone to break into the car. If someone steals my stereo, oh well. But if someone damages my Trabant in the process, I'm devistated!
My solution is to take the stereo out of my 1994 Ford Aspire (don't mock it, please) and put that in the Trabant. I will then replace the stereo in the Aspire. The receiver in the Ford is a Blaupunkt with a cassette deck and a line in connection (so I can mount my ipod/GPS directly) and I will put that in the Trabant. The speakers in the Aspire are still the stock speakers, and while certainly could be better, aren't awful and would be good enough for the Trabant. The Ford has 4 5.25" speakers (2 in front and 2 in back.) I will take 2 of those and put them in the back of the Trabant (and probably not put any speakers in the front of the Trabant.)
So, what do I do with my Ford once I've stripped the speakers?
1) Speakers? For a fixed total dollar amount, is it better to get a really good set of speakers for just the front? Or just the rear? Or replace all 4 with less good speakers?
2) Crutchfield / Best Buy / etc have speakers for such a large range of prices. How much do you think I need to spend to match the stock speakers of my Ford? How much should I spend on a decent set of speakers? I'd like something pleasing to listen to, but nothing for audiophiles. Afterall, while quieter than the Trabant, at highway speeds, the Ford isn't quiet, so I don't have any desire to spend big bucks.
3) I am almost definately decided on getting a Sony Xplode 610-Ui head unit as it seems to get good reviews, reasonable price, and has a bunch of features that are important to me (CD player that plays MP3s and AACs, a line in, and an ipod control.) Anyone have reason to argue against this choice?
4) Any advice on where to buy this stuff to get a good deal?
Thanks,
David
