New sub sounds horrible. Is it time for a new amp?

some subs just play certain frequencies better. maybe the new one just sucks at playing the higher frequencies. i know when i went from my old style type r to the treo ssi that i have now i gained a whole lot of bottom end over the type r. some subs just excel in the lows some excel in the upper bass region.

I have both filters set at 125hz. The box is sealed and is approx 1sq ft in size. The same box AND amp were used for both speakers. The smaller speaker was wired at 4ohms but this larger sub is wired at 1ohm.
The MTX is a mono amp but it has 4 terminals for convenience. I have the speaker wired in parallel and I'm using the + from one "channel" and the - from the other "channel".

I can listen to a song and my mid-high is NO louder than my door speakers. Literally you wouldn't even think I had a sub in here. Then when it hits the mid-low it sounds "ok". But when it hits the REALLY low notes (not in normal music) it almost throws the sub out of my box and distorts horribly.
Did only one other person catch this? If you set your high pass filter (HPF) and low pass filter (LPF) at 125 Hz. I imagine it would sound bad, it's a sealed box sow set your HPF at the lowest value you can and your HPF at 80-100 and play with it to see where it sounds best.

With both filters set at the same number it'll play that frequency louder than any other frequency. The further away from that frequencey you get the more it's filtered out.

The 1501d is also only stable at 2ohm. I think I read somewhere they can be modded to run at 1ohm. I have th 801d and this is the info I was given. Here's a link to the owners manual. http://www.mtx.com/caraudio/archive/2004amps/Thunder_421D_801D_1501D.pdf

I have my pioneer deck at like 80hz for the sub output and I don't have the freq on the amp turned all the way up but pretty close. I don't think your amp is the problem. I think it's a combo of wrong settings on amp and deck and probably not the right box.

After quickly glanzing at the specs for that sub it's rec. enclosure is .5 to 1.0 cu ft so the box shouldn't be the problem here cause you said it's in 1.0 correct.

Ok guys I just confirmed this crap. I grabbed my old Orion (only 500rms) and threw it back in there. Man....that thing will rattle the brain!!!

I had the truck parked in the drive way and it rattled the windows on the house. With the Pioneer you can literally stand beside the truck and hear nothing. Not even the doors rattle or anything!!!!

Its got to be the sub. But WTF!!!!!! I heard all this hype on how freaking loud and amazing these Pioneers were. For god sakes it can handle double the power. Did I just get a shitty one or something???
