I would say find a 99-02 audi A4 or S4 if you can up your spending. It is allwheel drive and fun as hell to drive and won't kill you on gas. Or if you could find a legacy that would not be bad either. Or a Passat with 4 motion.

miata's are fantastic cars and by far the best roadsters you can get for the money. They handle like go-karts

my friend has one that he convverted to turbo, now thats a fast go cart

You can get a 01 blazer xtreme w/ 80,000 like mine for around $5000...

I like my F150. Get an ext. cab and you can take out the back seat and put plenty of audio equipment back there. If you don't want to do that the back seat makes a handy shelf. It keeps anything you want within arms reach, and you can still fit at least 2 10"s back there under the seat. Of course they make 4x4's too so you might consider it. Just my 2 cents.

I love the new explorers, my gf's mom just got one. They ride great and are very comfortable, 4.0 V6 in it, its not bad on gas and still has enough gitty up to move along through traffic. I would love to have one over my car.

I think they are very practical vehicles and would love one myself. Its all up to you and what you want in a vehicle.
