Need help with Ford Explorer Sport

Hey everyone,

I've been out of the car audio scene for a few years because I've been riding motorcycles. I now have a '99 Ford Explorer Sport. I want a system in it and I'm thinking new headunit going to a crossover going to two amps. One amp will power two subs (I'm thinking 10's since I like crisp bass w/ my rap) and the other amp will power speakers in the front doors (I'm thinking components, but crutchfield's diagram says they are 5 1/4 so I don't know if any will fit or where to mount the tweeters). I'm not thinking about using the rear-panel speakers since the components in front and subs in back should be fine.

So, first off does this sound ok and what brands/models should get the job done.

Second, I don't want to do anything custom since the car has 100k on it already and I don't know how long it will last, but I would like to conceal as much as possible. I would like a box w/ carpet that matches the interior (beige). I'm not sure where I could mount the amps and crossover except on the box, but that would make a quick grab if anyone though of taking them. Maybe under the seats and the crossover in the console or glovebox.

Again, any ideas or suggestions on box and install to conceal the gear?

I'm looking to do this for under $1000.00 and I'll be looking on eBay for a lot of your recommendations.

Thanks for any help and I will be doing the install myself (except for box),

I figured my first post was rather vague, so I have a more specific question:

Here is what I have planned so far:

Alpine 9845

2 10" Alpine Type R

set of 5 1/4 Alpine SPR-136A components

Would it be possible to bypass the crossover and two amps and run these on one 4 channel amp? The subs need 500w each and the components need somewhere between 100-150. The amp would need to have a built in crossover....any suggestions or should I stick with two amps?

Sounds like you have the foundation for a nice system. Your definitly on the right track choosing alpine... they won't let you down. As far as the crossovers and the 2 amps, most new amps have built in crossovers for LP/HP. Since you've already chose alpine equip it would be sensable to get a matching alpine amp, however its hard to find an alpine amp thats going to give you the power you need for those 10's and comps. If i where you i would get two amps. You may be interested in these amps.

Good place to conceal stuff is where the factory amps and such are behind the passenger cargo area trim. Room enough for a decent size amp and a x-over I'm sure.

IMO two amps would be better in this situation because of the large power difference needed between your components and subs.

I got a explorer sport as well, check out my sounddomain page in my sig.
