Ok, Im moving into an apartment next year and need a cheap setup that gets loud. Its going to be used entirely for music, mostly when we have parties or whatnot. My budget is under $150 for all the drivers and wood and its going to be a stereo system, so no surround needed. I was looking at the BIB setups, but they're just too big. I was thinking maybe a 10 and a full range driver in each cabinet (separate enclosures of course), or a 10, a mid, and a tweet in each with a cheap crossover (ebay crossover if needed, just somehting to split the signal for the tweet and mid). Any opinions?

How big will the room be roughly? I am running Pioneer B20s with tweeters crossed over with a cap ran in parallel. They are currently in "Half Changs" (frugal-horn.com for the plans) and a Pioneer SA-7100 which is around 20 watts a channel. It gets plenty loud for a 10 x 20 foot room...Total driver cost was 70ish shipped...sounds good too //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif And dips fairly low (F3 is around 32hz IIRC)...

The enclosures are 4 feet high, 10ish inches wide, and 13ish inches deep...

Its roughly 13 by 25 or so. its an apartment with an open kitchen, living room, and sun room. I was looking at the polk r50's fpr around $140 shipped, but it sounds like the tweeter gives out before the mids do and high levels and you almost have to get a sub. Partsexpress has a new diy called the Woodies http://www.partsexpress.com/projectshowcase/indexn.cfm?project=woodies . But it looks like those really cant handle the lows either. Im wondering if I should do one 10 or 12 ported, and then in each cabinet a couple 6.5's and a tweet.

what about 3 of these in each cabinet with around .35cuft per driver tuned to around 80hz., paired up with 12" sub tuned to the low 30hz.? That'll put me closer to the $200 range, but I want have to worry about any crossovers or anything.

Ok, I will admit I am a complete noob when it comes to Half Changs and Full Changs, but I am looking to get loud enough for parties. My question is, whats the concensis on using two B20's per cabinet with a tweeter? They're only $22 a pop, so it would keep me within my budget. And what tweeter did you use? Again, I dont have a clue how or why these things work, but Im just throwing out ideas...so please enlighten me.

I know they are out of your budget but the Magna *** Laude look like a true party speaker.
yea, i saw those, but they are def out of my budget. But those "half changs" do look promissing, especially if two drivers will work per cabinet.

12"PA driver and horn.
Would lose some fidelity, and it could be fatiguing...plus it would be semi-difficult to stay in budget...and you would need a subwoofer for the lows...to many negatives IMO
That would easily be the loudest route though, maybe some cheap drivers like so:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=290-382

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=270-186

Drivers alone would be 140ish though, figure in crossover components, horn bodies, components to tame the hot horn, shipping, wood, etc, and it may easily clime over 200...

Cheap, good, loud.
Pick two.
Depends on your definition of "loud" and "good" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
Pioneer B20s are the best budget 8 inch full rangers out there...they are cheap, sound darn good paired with a tweeter and a few inexpensive cone treatments, and can handle a good amount of power with a high pass filter to achieve "loud" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Look at his room, its not massive at all. When my half changs were in my parent's living room (30x40feet) my little 20 watt per channel amp was enough to fill the room...

If he said he doesn't have the room for BIB's I fail to see why he thinks he will have the room for Half changs. The footprint would be very similar. I'm not saying that they can't get loud or sound decent for cheap, I just don't see how he thinks he will have the room.

BIBs for the pioneers properly built to get the most out of them have a 14 x 20 inch foot print and are over 7 feet tall //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif Half Changs are less then 4 feet tall and have a 11 x 13 inch footprint...What pulled him away from the BIBs is probably the height...
He seems like a college student, so I would imagine lugging that massive cabinet everywhere would be a pain...Reason I chose the Half Changs is they fit in the rear seat of my car, and thats a big plus //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I am not trying to argue with you, just putting in my two cents....both setups would probably get the job done...just saying the Half Changs would be cheaper and more than likely sound better unless you shell out the money for quality PA drivers...
