Need cheap and loud, doesn't ahve to be prefect...

BIBs for the pioneers properly built to get the most out of them have a 14 x 20 inch foot print and are over 7 feet tall //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif Half Changs are less then 4 feet tall and have a 11 x 13 inch footprint...What pulled him away from the BIBs is probably the height...
He seems like a college student, so I would imagine lugging that massive cabinet everywhere would be a pain...Reason I chose the Half Changs is they fit in the rear seat of my car, and thats a big plus //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I am not trying to argue with you, just putting in my two cents....both setups would probably get the job done...just saying the Half Changs would be cheaper and more than likely sound better unless you shell out the money for quality PA drivers...
Exactly. I am a college student and am living on the 3rd floor next year with no elevators, so the BIB's will be too much to haul around. Plus, I only have a Grand Cherokee, so that ~4ft height is pleasing. I think im going to do the Half Changs if I can find the plan for them. Put a couple coats of bed liner on them and let their college lives begin. And Im guessing since people are only sending them 20-30w, then a receiver that puts out 85wpc will be enough for these?

I got it for ya

Edit: Also you can replace the "steps" with a single 45 degree angle piece, which is what I did, just do the math...Its a fairly straight forward build, just take your time...

Sweet, that looks real easy. Whats something good to put in the bottom to weigh the cabinets down? I was thinking a couple gallon bags of sand in each. And is tweeter placement important? Also, is rounding the edges around the port necessary? I know in caraudio boxes, it helps reduce port noise, and I would think its the same in this case as well.

Yes sand would be good...I didn't round over the edges and I get no port noise, if you want to do it then more power to you...
Tweeter placement isn't wildly important...Just place it somewhere at ear level when seated, I just stuck them on the 1 and 11 o'clock positions on the left and right cabinets, respectively...

Fill up the angled bottom compartment section with sand for stability.
There is no tweeter, it's full range.

Rounding isn't terribly important but it is a nice touch.
These 8s sound dull without a helper tweeter from 8-10K up...muffled is a better word...they NEED a helper tweeter in stock form...
Really any full range speaker over 5 inches will more than likely need a helper tweeter, even fostex units can benefit from one...

For his purposes a tweeter will just jack up the price, I say leave it off until he gets more cash.
It doesn't need anything fancy since it's crossed over so high...many have had success with the Dayton 5 dollar tweeters with a ~2uF cap which is what I did...12 bucks total //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

is this the cap i need? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=027-216

with this tweeter? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=275-030

and i've been trying to find the B20 "modifications" but can't. I remember reading somewhere where something is painted on the cone and something else can be cut off..?

I just read about putting dammar on the whizzer and puzzlecoat on the cone? its supposed to help smooth out the sound and increase the upper range?...i think anyways.

Thats exactly what I have...I tried different cap values and that worked the best...which is what another fellow used...
I wouldn't worry about modifications just yet. I still haven't modified mine just yet because I have been ENJOYING them. Sometimes we get caught up in tweaking that we never do get to sit down and enjoy them...

One thing that I would suggest is a piece of foam (the stuff used to pack packages works well, found almost anywhere) behind the wizzer, thick enough to support the wizzer on the cone. This is called the "98 cent" tweak. Didn't think it would make that much of a difference, but I noticed vocals, specifically female, weren't as muffled and colored, almost airy if that makes sense...

One last thing, placement is key. Usually the equilateral triangle rule (listing position distance to each speaker is the same length as the speaker separation) works best and these are not an exception. Toe them in towards the listening position, about 10 degrees, just a tiny bit really. Just make sure they are not on axis or imaging will disappear. Tried various positions, and this worked best for me. Depth was pretty good...
