Need Advice after visiting Local Dealer

Hey all,

I have been doing some research on my own and decided on a set up, went to the local car audio dealer to quote an install price on stuff I would bring in and after a while he was trying to sell me their stuff. I know that is his job but he started to convince me and I wanted an opinion from people that aren't trying to make a buck.

I have a 03 dodge quad cab and I planned on getting 2 Alpine Type-R 10s in a ported box made by fox acoustics because I heard that was the best box you could get outside of building a fiberglass box. I was going to power them with an Alpine MRX-110. They claim it has 1.35 cubic feet per sub but the dealer said there is no way they have that much because the customfit boxes they usually install only have about .6 cubic feet and he said they take up most of the area. They do not sell Alpine at this dealer. He recommended I get 2 Phoenix Gold SX 10" subs powered by their SX 600.1 amp in a sealed box they carry. I do like to thump every now and then but my main concern is sound quality. What do you guys think? I have never had any Phoenix gold stuff and I have had a Type-R and it was ok. The setup he quoted me was about $150 more than the first route I had planned.

So I guess I want to know if Phoenix Gold is any good and if I would be better going his route or was he just trying to sell me his stuff. I would kinda like to purchase local that way I have warranty on my stuff. They offer 2 year warranty on everything they install. Sorry if I left any details out. Let me know if you have further questions.

I'll vouch for the Phoenix Gold SX series. I bought one for my brother this summer. They're very efficient full range class D, regulated power supply (designed by Stephen Mantz), and have a tiny footprint.

Vertex Audio (on this forum) has them for sale at a very reasonable price and I'll also vouch for him as being on the up and up as I just ordered some goodies from him last week.

Not sure about the PG subs though. Alpine Type R have always been good value/performers for mainstream brand subs so they'll probably be pretty hard to beat.

That box looks quite nice. You'd need a lot of time to do better yourself, at least as far as utilizing every inch of space, just confirm that those subs won't give you trouble with mounting depth.

The company that makes the box recommends the Type-R. They said they have tried countless subs in it and the Type-R was the best performer so that is why I was going that route. The only thing I was concerned about is it the port is set up right because I know a poorly tuned port can ruin the sound quality. I've heard a lot of good things about this setup in the forums though. Thanks for the replies.

Do you guys think the MRX-M110 would do alright powering 2 Type-Rs? I can get that amp for about $260. I figured that was probably my best bang for my buck but if you have any suggestions let me know. Thanks.

Seems a fair price for 1000W. I'm not in love with Alpine amps but at that price point I can't think of anything better.
