MythBusters - Shattering Subwoofer

Knowing their penchant for using pro audio stuff (as was alluded to just above), I'd like to see 'em use one of Tom Danley's Servodrive Contrabass or the Bass Tech 7 servo subs. Those things can generate so much air movement, it'd be hard NOT to bend metal.

I've known people with the Contrabass subs, that have actually CRACKED THE FRAMEWORK of their houses. Buddy of mine, who had one in his house, has STILL yet to manage to get around to fixing all the cracks in the plaster! And this was in a 60 year old house... back when they actually built houses out of REAL STUFF... when a 2x4 was actually 2 inches by 4 inches (instead of 1.5" x 3.5" like it is now)...

Regards,

Gordon.

a little overhyped no?

Even anecho 18 18" woofers of decent quality sealed with 5400w should be able to bust 122dB @10m

in theory... say we take the MJ 18 which has a theoretical efficency of 94dB (not uncommon for PA drivers). 18 of them should have a theoretical efficency of over 106dB 1w@1m

give them 5400w and that is a theoricial output of 142dB@1m (in theory and that is conservative) 10m is -10dB so that is 132dB

thoes are some **** 18's //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Read what they said about power compression. I work on pro drivers (reconing), so I see what kind of motor systems they use. I also work on car audio drivers... and comparing the typical motor systems, the car audio drivers will power-compress just as fast as the pro drivers.

6 dB of power compression is NOT uncommon. JBL has done some white-paper research on this... it's on the jblpro.com site, IIRC...

The point of the servo system, is that it's efficient enough that you DON'T have to use NEARLY as much power... so power compression (heat) isn't an issue...

And BTW: 10 meters gives 20dB of loss... not 10 dB. Inverse square law. Unless it's a line-array, it's not linear, it's to the square of distance....

Gordon.

They filmed this at SBN this year. I didnt make it so I cant say what car they did it with.
They filmed Steve Cook and Bob Perillo's run against each other and the tiebreaker run. Had the camera right in my face the whole time.

They also filmed Tommy and Neill's Bass Race run. No shattered windows though and all 4 of them can do it but whats the point when your at a competition trying to win.

man that sux, they went about it all wrong....i hope they just show a few clips here and there about it, and do something themselves to a normal car with no "support" inside it

My buddy was telling me he read a report of some guy getting killed at some competition cause his system came on full tilt while he was messing with it at a show. Anyone heard anything regarding this? I figure you could probably mess your ears up pretty bad, but death?

...I dunno though, the more I watch these body flex videos, the more I imagine what all that pressure can do to a human body's organs.

From what I've read. Pushing anything past 1500W can potentially cause a lung to collapse. So, I'm guessing it might be possible to kill oneself during a comp. However, thinking about a little makes one ask. Why would the wattage matter when it would be the dB.....right?....or at least the air movement that would kill you......not the pure wattage.

Anywho....my vote is for Realistics......from Radio Shack......they rock!!!!!!!!!!

LOL....sorry, i tried to get through that with a straight face.
