My speaker "journey". In need of some advise.

So let me make this quick. Here is what I've had so far for my front stage. And this issues with each.

1- Massive DX2's in dash and SPR69 in doors - DX2's couldn't keep up with the R's

2- SRP69 in doors only. - Horrible off axis response (duh!)

3 - SPR60c components. - Harshest sound I've ever heard in a car. 800-3K super loud.

4. - Incriminator audio IC6.5 comps, also hash sound. Not as bad, but is very fatiguing on many songs.

I have installed adjustable L-Pads to control the tweets, it's the midrange that's killing me.

So here is my question, Need speakers that are in no way harsh in the midrange. Not super worried about bright tweets (have l-pads) or Midbass. My doors are treated yet so I won't know for a while anyway.

Looking at two options.

1 - Morel Maximo 6.5s - Reputable brand, good reviews, in my price range

2 - RE XXX 6x9 comps - Drops right in factory location ( no adaptor)

However the response shown on the RE site doesn't looks so good IMO.

I'm open to other suggestions, but here is what you need to know.

Price - Under 300.00 Dollars (I'm in the US)

Amp - They are running off of a PDXf4. So they can't be afraid of some power.

Tweets - I have l-pad. It's ok if there isnt adjustable tweets on crossover.

What do you people think?

I'm tried of spending all my money on speakers and hating them. I'm not looking to compete SQ, just want something that is as listenable as my 100.00 Klipsch computer speaker. Seriously is it that hard. Lol

Any advise is very appreciated!

Your computer speakers don't get thier responce destroyed by thier envirment. You have to tune the speaker for the car.

You can toss in a set of focal elites and sound like a$$ with no way to adjust them
The problem is I have measured them outside of the vehicle and the response is crap. Its not the car. Besides the right door speaker (assuming no passenger) is right on axis with my ear. I ran a track though a DAW and used all kinds of processing to try and clean them up. It wasn't happening.

I had considered a Mini-DSP, but there is a part of me that doesn't want to spend money on processing if I don't like the speakers Im using from the start.

My HU already has some degree of time alignment as well as a 9band semi-peq. All measurements done with Smaart or REW and an RTA mic.

The reason I felt it was a speaker problem is just opening the doors and listening to the speakers directly was very harsh.

Wire isn't the problem. The issue is the passive crossover lets the mid play way to high.
oh no, I wasn't imply that the wire was, just that being out of phase would be easy on the poorly labeled stock wires.

That would make since tho. I actually liked the sound I got from my full ranges on the dash. Just too small to play pearl jam at 95 ;-)

Most companies don't seem to tell you the Xover point. I could always go active and match my own speakers. But I would need another amp, more power wire, DSP, etc...

Would love to find a set that has good Xover point at the start.

EDIT: The morels have the Xover at 3500. Looked at the curve I measured. Looks Like they aren't dropping off till 5K????

I disconnected the right tweeter and panned everything to the right. Played a Cd and used an rta on my phone. Here the results. looks the the woofer is playing super high.

Morels have a 12db filter, according to their site.

So let's say I get the morels, and I think to myself. Yeah I need to go active. Would they be suitable for active setup? I would be running the tweets and woofers off of a PDXf4. Which can do over 100w/ch rms. Not worried about giving the woofers that, but tweets would be an issue I assume?
