Why are people all about using a DMM for gain settings? Are people really so bad that they can't hear a sub struggling or an amp clipping? DMMs are almost always off unless you spend over $75 on one. I don't trust any DMM to set my gains as my ears are much better at the job.
As for the Type-Es being about as loud, try playing music with 30hz material or so and then see how loud his setup is. Most pre-fabs are tuned to 38-40hz or so and those Type-Es will not handle much below tuning.
