Why are people all about using a DMM for gain settings? Are people really so bad that they can't hear a sub struggling or an amp clipping? DMMs are almost always off unless you spend over $75 on one. I don't trust any DMM to set my gains as my ears are much better at the job.

As for the Type-Es being about as loud, try playing music with 30hz material or so and then see how loud his setup is. Most pre-fabs are tuned to 38-40hz or so and those Type-Es will not handle much below tuning.

i'm pretty sure that 90% of the noobs that set their gains by ear are clipping, a LOT.

i don't doubt your ear, i'm sure an experienced user wouldn't have much trouble detecting slight clipping, but to an untrained ear it may not become noticeable until clipping very badly.

Yeah it is a funny thing. A proper box can make so much difference. Type E's do sound good. They seem to take a back seat so to speak to a lot of subs around here. I think alot of that has to be because of type R having so much more muscle then type E. If you had a coustom box for those asassans, you probably would hear a world of difference. Just a thought.

i've got a set of 12" Type E's in my trunk right now at the moment...

they're in a 2.8 cube enclosure tuned to 45hz with an active HP filter keeping excursion under control under tuning. (NOT my setup, its a lil something something i'm building for a friend... the box is sexy... 1/2" roundovers all around, miter jointed corners, i'm carpeting tonight or tomorrow)

I've only got about 350 watts on 'em, but they get impressively loud... by ear they sound like about 135dbs (compared to the few 140+ db systems i've heard)... if you get a deal on them they're great subs for the money...

I can just see a dude sitting in a plexi glass booth. Big, fancy "That Kid Bob Lab" over it. two cars roll uo, roll down their windows. He sticks his head in one, types in a score and it comes up...sticks his head in the other, types up a score and everyone cheers and the cars drive away.
