My assassins vs friends type Es

One of my friends has 2 12 inch type Es in a prefab ported box I don't know what amp he has but i know its alpine (his whole system is) and that hes using 8gauge power wire. He doesnt know much about car audio so we were just comparing our subs for fun and i figured mine would be a decent amount louder than his because my amp is bigger but his really impressed me i've never heard type Es before. Mine and his sounded very similair. I am kindof dissapointed now because his was so similiar to mine. Could i turn my gain up a little more to gain more output right now its set at 40 volts with a 0db test tone? Has anyone else compared assassins and type Es before? What were the results?

The box you have vs his and the different cars are possibly going to make a big difference in the total output.

If you set your gains with a 0 dB tone and you have no bass eq'ing then you are getting no where near the maximum potential from your subs. That is, unless you are playing 0 dB test tones when you are listening.

x 2

Also he had 12"s you have 10"s.....think about it....his 2 12"s sounded similar to your 2 10"s.....you have a bigger amp....he has more cone area.

Are you using a ported box....what is it tuned to...is it a prefab box?

How many watts is his amp supposed to do?

What size box are you using?

I say get 2 more Assassins and another zx750.1,build a ported enclosure tuned 32-35Hz and pwne him!

Read above

And i would love to get 2 more and another amp but i dont have enough money and i'd like to keep a little bit of trunk space

Actually our cars are very similiar also his being a 2005 impala and mine is a 2004 monte carlo.

Ok, so you're disappointed that your setups sounded similar? Let me get this straight:
Your subs were $70 apiece, whereas his were probably $100 apiece

His subs are 12's, yours are 10's

His box is probably tuned high to get maximum loudness, yours is tuned for sq

Your gains are set correctly, whereas his are probably cranked to make his subs loud

In my books, you win.
Lol if i look at it that way i guess i didnt do to bad. And he did say something about when he turns the bass boost to plus 6 his car shakes to much so he has to turn it down. I guess i didnt expect much from them since everyone thinks so poorly of prefab enclosures on here.

Turn you gains up. Subs aren't as bothered by clipping as many smaller higher frequency drivers are. You can usually set a subs gain by ear without any real worry unless you a total basshead/idiot.

Yeah it is a funny thing. A proper box can make so much difference. Type E's do sound good. They seem to take a back seat so to speak to a lot of subs around here. I think alot of that has to be because of type R having so much more muscle then type E. If you had a coustom box for those asassans, you probably would hear a world of difference. Just a thought.

you should have no problem at all using a -6dB or even -10dB tone!

as long as you're careful and never turn you deck up past the point where the set the gains at.

i went from -3dB tones to -10dB (3:1 overlap) and it made a HUGE difference! and i still have a VERY little clipping with music.

i have two assassin 12's in 3.5ft^3 @ 32Hz with 800W total power also in a trunk car and mine get quite loud. my rearview mirror goes straight up until it's banging against the windshield, noise starts itching a lot, pretty good windshield flex, etc.

also, for comparison set his gains with a DMM as well. use the same tone as you do with all bassboost, EQ, etc off. i'm willing to bet he'll need to turn his down. i set my buddy's gains with a -10dB tone and still had to turn them down.

i believe he does: 2.5ft^3 @ 32Hz

his buddy is using the prefab.

3:1 gain structure is the way to go. You'll briefly clip at the highest peaks on music, at high listening levels, you'll actually get use out of your equipment. 10:1 you'll never see even half of your RMS on music, average power levels are disgustingly low.

yeah, i should mention that i would ONLY clip with HU volume at the same setting as when i set the gains, and even then only on certain songs on certain bass hits.

with normal volume levels (still loud) you won't have any clipping.
