Motor Polishing Help

still might end up needing some wet/dry sandpaper. Just keep going to finer grits until you are ready for polishing compounds...
Yeah, as soon as I get all the whiteish/greyish shit off of there, I'll be wet-sanding. I have 1000, 1500, and 2000.

Im going to try a few more things to add to the write up and this looks like a good one
I think it would be great after the WD-40 step. One or two applications of this does some good. You can then go to town on actually scrubbing.

It works well to remove any remaining clear coat on the steel. Once I wipe all of it off' date=' I clean up the motor with alcohol or water and dry it off. Then I get right to the Mothers. I just do it over and over by hand until it's as shiny as I want it to be. An important part of working the metal is to keep using the same rag when you apply the Mothers. The metal left behind on the rag will help knock down the rest of what you're polishing. However, I do keep using new rags to buff off the remainder off.

Ill try it on my Neo to get it to that next step...

Well, 3rd day in. FML.

I've still got a tiny ring around the hole that needs to be removed, other than that, the hard scrubbing is done on the bottom. Scratched it a bit, but I should be able to clean that up with some finer steel wool/sandpaper. Still have to do the 1/4" on the side of the bottom of the metal under the magnet, then try to figure something out for the top plate. But definitely looking better.

Looks great! Those scratches will come out with each round of the Mothers. The step where it tells you to rub until you see black... keep rubbing a bit longer than that, almost until it's too dry to rub anymore. That's what will knock the metal down, especially if you keep using the same black ass rag with all the built up metal. Then buff that off with a clean rag. Do it fast like you're jerking off.

I once bought a few Zapcos that looked like hell but I brought them back to life with my hands over a period of five days. I think I know what arthritis feels like.

That made me laugh, because that's basically what I have been doing. But don't worry about the scratches right now at all? I was going to try to buff them down a little before I moved to the Mother's, but if that's not necessary then fuck that.

I chuckled when I typed it, lol.
You can buff them down if you feel like it. One way or another you're going to put in the work. I like to do it with the polish.

Thanks man, you've been a big help. I have to say, if the finished product didn't look so good, I would have said screw this a while ago. I wouldn't doubt this being the roughest thing of my whole build lol.

You're welcome, I hear ya. If I weren't a neurotic collector, there's no way in hell I would put in the work, lol..

So here's how it stands after about 25 minutes of Mother's on the top:

You can see the difference between the top (again, 25 minutes of Mother's application, I think it was 3 coats) and the bottom (no Mother's, that's how it all looked after I got done scrubbing the oxidation). This stuff is good. I might try the other 2 polishes I have (Nevr-Dull pads and Blue Magic metal polish cream) on the bottom and see how they do, but it's hard to argue with the results of Mother's, even only the little time I put in.

use the silver can of neverdull. wear gloves cause that **** stinks 10 mins buffing with the fiber stuff in the can and youll be set //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

Well someone didn't read -_-

Lol

I have those pads and Blue Magic that I'm going to try on the bottom, see which one of these three works best.

Verdict: I like the Mother's the best. The Nevr-Dull is just not abrasive enough, might be ok for a later, final polish step, but not useful now. I really couldn't tell a difference between the Blue Magic and Mother's in the final product, they both did well. The Blue Magic leaves a film on there, which would be good for only a polish on metal in automotive applications, but not useful to me as I would just strip that off before I clear-coat it, though still a plus there. Why I like the Mother's better though is because the Blue Magic stinks really bad, and is also harder to wipe off. Mother's is just easier to work with. But again, couldn't really tell a difference in the polished metal.
