Marts DSP clip/limiter

Anyone have exp with the Marts BTX8? It has a clipping/limiter indicator. It says if it's not clipping that means the limiter is engaging? Also what the f do I set threshold, attack and release to on this? I've left it on auto with the threshold on max (6, it doesn't auto-set that) for my 1000w sub and the light comes on at about ¾ volume. I know clipping means the tips of the sine waves are cut off but where/why does that happen? At the amp? Speaker? How is the DSP picking up on it? And how do I get rid of it or is that what the limiter is for?
