low (22Hz) port tuning in real world trunk applications

I'm looking at a pair of AP Epic 12 d4 woofers.

WinIsd says I should tune these babies at a

nice deep 22Hz in a reasonable 3.75 cu ft.

I was wondering about the real world application

of such a low tuning, many woofers can tune that low.

Most manufacturers still recommend 28-32 Hz even though

that graphs a little peaky for thier woofer. The same peak

happens for the Epic 12's if tuned higher.

So what is the real world result for a very flat response down

to 22 Hz (basically 20 Hz @ -3db). Does a slightly higher tuning

end up sounding better (say 28 - 32 Hz), or only louder?

I would never tune that low... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif Sounds like it would only be good to act as like a home theater sound, and not musical ,if that makes any sense

It's very possible and it can easily work if you're looking for a wide sub range without a ton of total output.

Many manufacturers recommend higher tunings using the trade of of bandwidth for output. Tuning higher will give you higher output over a smaller range while tuning lower will decrease total output but extend your range.

It can be very musical and more so than a system that cannot get down that low or one that is very peaky in a narrow spectrum.

It's really all in your listening preference.

yea higher you tune, realistically the less musical it gets, because your output is peakier and drops off earlier and it becomes more and more good for just a single note the higher you get

it sounds like you'd be happy with a 22hz tuning

I got 2 people saying it's okay and one that it's less

musical //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

And don't forget the folks having fun, which I don't mind at

all btw.

Anybody else?
