looking for a top notch SQ headunit

I'm looking for a headunit, and the only thing I care about is sound quality and more sound quality. Crossovers/equalizers are nice extras but not important since my amps can do most of that. Price doesn't matter too much, as long as its not outrageous (like over $500). Any suggestions?

I agree that the CD500 is hideous but the Eclipse 7000 is NO beauty queen either. In fact its quite atrocious looking.

The 880 will do just as much and sound just as good as the 7000 and it is beautiful looking. Not to mention alot cheaper than the 7000.

Anyway, to the thread starter: If you're looking for a pure SQ unit you're NOT going to find one under $500 unless you find a used but PROVEN older SQ headunit. If you're looking for a decent SQ headunit then the ones listed above are more than adequate.

The Nakamichi name is a good name. But that deck is NOT an example of Nakamichi quality. DO NOT confuse this deck for the CD-700II, it is NO where near being in the same boat with it. And yes, the 500 is ugly as sin.

Agreed. I think they even made a model that had an HDCD decoder.
