First and fore most I would like to Thank TC sounds for giving me the opportunity to test and abuse this driver //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.

Build Quality:

TC sounds in the past has had some QC issues, but seems to have put enough R&D into the 5400 since I saw no flaws. Though their replaceable top assembly is a great idea, it is non-user friendly. You have to really crank it to make sure it’s completely tight, and if not completely tightened it can sound like the coil is rubbing.

Car, Enclosure and Power:

We reviewed the 18" monster in a 2001 Chevy Tahoe. It was powered by an IA 40.1 receiving more than enough power via 3 odyssey 2150's. The enclosure we used was on the smaller side 3.6 cu ft sealed (per TC sounds request).

Music:

When testing the driver we had a few ideas in mind. First would be the obvious the output of the driver, second sound quality of the driver and third accuracy of the driver. For musical output we decided to use Nellyville - Air force one. The LMS 5400 carried bass lines very well and completely destroyed the lows. However, I feel the output was slightly insufficient due to the size of the driver. For the sound quality of the driver we played Beethoven - 7th symphony. When listening to the driver during this test, it reproduced the bass line very well and accurately. For accuracy of the driver we listen to heavy metal (The name of the band and song are unknown to me). This is were the LMS 5400 really came to life and started to shine. Its ability to reproduce bass with the accuracy it was not only amazing to me, but to everyone else in the car. It had absolutely not issues keeping up with double, triple and quadruple drum kicks.

Side notes: I personally enjoyed this driver tremendously. Its accuracy is unmatched which to me makes it undoubtedly unique. The power handling of the LMS 5400 was very surprising as well. It took everything the 40.1 had to offer and just wanted more power. I also believe the output of the driver would have been better with a larger enclosure (around 5 cubic feet).

Grade (1-10 scale)

Build Quality: 9.5

Output Ability: 8.5

Sound Quality: 9.0

Accuracy: 10.0

Overall: 9.25

ehhh...is it worth 1k thou..lol
The driver is well worth it, but there is a reason why it was designed for high end home theater use //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

lets see the **** dammit //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
I dont think you guys can handle it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

TC wanted it in a small sealed enclosure. I do plan on testing it in a ported, but time is a factor (it will get done). Pics will be coming.
nice

Can we get some numbers from 25-70hz or so? Maybe in incriments of 5hz or so?
Good review though!
x2

so basically it isnt practical for car audio use....its more of a home audio sub?

If someone in so cal is willing to let me use their TL I would love to do this test. I was trying prior to the review, but had no luck.

I would have to say yes this is more of a HT driver.
