Well, let's see ... it's a diesel @ approximately 1000 RPM ... I'd assume at least 50lb-ft of torque at that engine speed, which equates to about 9.5 horsepower ...
745.7 watts = 1 horsepower

9.5 horsepower = 7084 watts (At least !)

Then you take a speaker which is 51" in diameter (less the surround, of course, which looks to make it about 45" in diameter). This gives it approximately 10,000 square centimeters of cone area, which is roughly equivalent to 20 12" subwoofers ...

Then consider the fact that it looks to have about 4" of excursion each way judging by the crank ...

It was a deisel motor. I would guess more torque than that. Maybe close to 100. Deisels produce a good amount of torque right off the bat.

With some refinement, however, I am sure the mythbuster design is capeable of 180 dB+

If they could get it into its power band they would not only have more power but a higher frequincy.

They just need to make it more linear so it doenst tare its self apart. We discussed it on SSA.

It seems the best idea is to used a small 1cyl engine, take the head off, and use the top of the piston as the pushing force. This way all movement would be 100% linear. Add some sort of spider and a better surround and baffle. If that doesnt get them close to 180dB I dont know what will.

And that is deffanitely not a record for mechanical noise inducers. However, at 16Hz that is **** impresive.

Actually, it is EXTREMELY close. Though 16Hz is C below the lowest C on a piano, lowest E flat is 15.X Hz?

But the pressure involved with 161dB @16Hz would be enough to hurt something I would think...besides your hearing.
