JL 10w7 Options?

Ok guys. Long story short I picked up two jl 10w7s for 20 bucks each here locally. Coils spiders and cones are all fine. The surround is dry rotted beyond repair. Iv cut it off the cones and cleaned them up. Iv though about finding a taller more narrow surround and mounting it on the inside of the basket landing like a normal sub instead of jls gay wrap around mounting option.

my next question is if that doesnt work or throws off the t/s parameters so bad to where they sound like krap what could I do for a recone.

Iv read about people retapping 12spoke baskets to fit the motor. Only problem with the 10 is that it has a weird coil size. (2.75") Now my coils are perfectly fine.

Does retapping baskets and using the standard coils with new soft parts sound feasible to you guys or what?

Also. I know this sub is pretty much mutually hated on all CA forums. I personally would never buy them. But I got them so **** cheap that I want to get creative with them. Come on guys give me some input here. Iv done reconing before so this isnt anything new to me. Just trying to get some input on what you guys might like to see done to these.

just fix the surround, why spend more money than you need to? It's a good sub, people just like to hate on JL, but personally I think the w7 is nice.

i love my 10w7. i think it's $220 to get it fixed thru JL, IIRC.

i'll buy one off you if you want. 3rd one for my set up would be sweet.

a w7 with a normal surround could be kinda cool,

you could also look into building them into 8s for shits and giggles

lol if i use them there going into a small 4th order blow through in my 88 s10. lol 8s are out would probley do them as 12s or mill the top plate and bore the crap out of them and make some badssa 15s out of them. btw mini belongs to a buddy of mine. 2 18" re mts and a sundown 3k at .5 ohms walled.

also Id rather use them as paper weight than give monies to jl. I would rebuild these from ground up for less than 100 each and make them louder.
