Isn't Car Audio a Lost Cause SQ wise...?

15 grand in total isn't much in the scheme of things in home audio //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

As you get up in that range, however, a point of diminishing returns kicks in...do a pair of $10,000 speakers really sound twice as good as a $5,000 pair? I highly doubt it.

And don't tell me he's using a receiver with that setup, and hasn't gone to a full seperates system yet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Once you do, you'll never go back //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

i cant see any reason to spend more than 5k on a home stereo, thats the point to where the diminishing returns kicks in for me.

i really dont see how a pair of 5000 speaker can sound so much better than a good DIY set of $500 speakers in the right enclosure with the correct crossover.

i dunno. my car has about 3k worth of product in it, and once my crossover comes back, it should sound incredible once again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I think the best solution to SQ in car is - headphones. Honestly, although headphones will never sound as nice has a hifi room, they cost less (LOTS less) , and you dont have to deal with all the acoustics and imaging crap in your car.

Plus, I think subs always muddy up the music unless your using teeny little 8's or something.

No. At least around here it's illegal to drive with headphones, and the system in my truck sounds far better then my headphones, (although my Sennheiser HD500's sound pretty good too, but the free air doesnt block ambient noise very well)

yeah, well its probally illegal to drive around with a 140+ db system too. What headphones are you comparing your system in your truck to? My grado sr60's blow shit out of any car stereo Ive ever heard. If free air is a problem, get some closed headphones.

My headphones are Sennheiser HD500's... and I don't have a 140db system (do you listen to your headphones that loud?) I thought we were talking about SQ not SPL here...

Edit- In case you were wondering, your grado's are vented too, I've heard them and I'd take my Sennheisers.

?? I was just trying to make a point that who cares if you listen to headphones when you drive, sure its illegal, but so are alot of little things. Grados are open design. You probally dont want to be driving around with isolating headphones on. My sr60s were 60$, which is much less than for a set of those senns. I have the hd580s and I like the sr60's more.

The point is, headphones that are good quality, sound better than most car stereos.

He's saving up for that //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I'm not sure if he's getting the Rotel seperates or something better. I don't think he wants to spend more than $10k on seperates.

Do you mean home "stereo" or "theater"? A hi-fi system will be stereo, as in two speakers. A home theater will be something like 7.1.

And in order to see how a $5000 speaker sounds better than a $500 homemade speaker, you will have to listen to a $5000 speaker next to a $500 DIY speaker //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

a good set of headphones will destroy several thousands of dollars in car audio in sq. no contest. but its headphones. SOME car audio will be able to hold its own, but headphones DIRECT the sound DIRECTLY into your ear...in the car, you are fed signals that have bounced off of numerous surfaces and have distorted. its uneven because you're a different distance from each speaker....its no contest. you'd have to spend many thousands of dollars for good speakers and many hours customizing your ride with kick panels and pods that deliver the sound directly to you, unimpeeded.
