Is this normal restaurant BS? (tipping thread 2.0)

Yea if I remember correctly I believe if it is stated ahead of time, generally on the bottom of the menu as well then you are legally obligated to pay it as you are informed ahead of time that it is policy and thus by ordering food gathered as a larger party you are agreeing to their policy.

They state that, but most (if not all) will remove it if you ask.

And if someone did a bad job repairing my car and I had to get it fixed somewhere else, I would ask for something back, or they could fix it correctly. If a repair shop screws something up, you shouldn't have to pay for it. There's a difference from tipping. A labor charge is part of the charge you get when you get your estimate. It's not a gratuity. It's a charge.

Exactly if your not planning on tipping there is a McDonald's right up the street. I just always feel bad knowing if they don't get tips they are only making $2.16 an hour or something which generally becomes nothing with taxes and such. If they do a respectable job ya gotta tip em at least something as it is their paycheck.
Read back a bit. This is in response to bad (non-respectable) service. I do typically tip about 20%. I've only had the tip removed once and that was because the service was complete crap.

And an automated gratuity isn't a charge?

Alright I'm done or else we'd probably go back and forth all day //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

i can understand that...but the word gratuity, to me at least, means i choose what i tip. like i said, call it a "party fee" and ill be fine with it.
werd. There have been occasions where I get HORRIBLE service. I mean once, it was so bad that the waiter hardly ever came by, forgot some things, etc. I tipped only 5% for bringing the food, which was like 3 bucks. I was going to give the bus boy a $3 tip just for picking up the plates and asking if we needed anything. Usually they wait till you leave but he was very nice and helpful, but I didnt see him when it was time to leave.

I'm not a cheap bastard in any way. If I get grat service, I'll leave 20-25% tip. I've once tipped 28 or 30%. The food was really good, the service was excellent, couldn't ask for more. But if service is mediocre, i'll stick to 15%. If it is shit, then they can expect something that is 10% or below. Heck, at Hooters with some friends this dumb bish thought she could flirt with our ugly friend (wasnt really ugly, just hardly got play) and she came by only to take our order and bring the tip. Food took forever and there weren't many people there. We weren't gonna leave a tip at all, but my friend felt bad so my other friend threw in a quarter...the still felt bad so left a $5 tip...bastard

i agree im a sous chef at a country club and i see theese 17 yr old beverage cart chicks walking out with up to $300.00 in tips for a 6 hour shift riding a golf cart selling beer and ill be doing good to make half that in my shift
Maybe perhaps because they are serving guys alcohol and wearing skimpy outfits? (like the beer girls did at the country club I caddied at) //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Man....we really did have a lot of hot girls that drove that cart around. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/drool.gif.b5e863e893038027711d4402f340dad0.gif

Sounds to me like all of you who are *****ing haven't ever worked as a waiter for a large party. May not be true, that's just what it sounds like.
Some of the girls I work with bust their ever-lovin' ***** on parties like this, hell last night we had 3 or 4 groups of 10 or more, plus a 25 and a 30... those poor waitresses were in HELL. I'm glad they get paid ok, thanks to tips, but then there are assholes like the ones on this forum who say you shouldn't tip who make me wanna take someone outside and beat them into the ground.
hey i said i was gonna tip 20%....

i just dont like the wording used. i would rather they call it a fee, instead of gratuity, which to me suggests that its optional, like a bonus for doing a good job. eh, they lost 3%.

but like delvryboy said, i can understand that too. i have no problem tipping people especially when they work for shit money. i sure as hell am not gonna stiff someone on it, when they are already getting worked like a sweat shop worker by their employer.

a small bit of advice george......don't put the alcoholic beverages on he check....go to the bar and pay cash for them...they already have inflated prices so don't include it in the bill...just tip the bartender as you buy
i will keep that in mind.

I've seen forced gratuity % at places like IHOP when your party is over 4 or 5 people. It's probably for a very good reason, but just 2 people eating dinner at a nice restaurant, Never seen that before.

Its for them reserving the table and such for you, and sometimes where we work, if there's a few parties scheduled, they'll throw an extra cook on, so it helps pay for that. I do agree though, as most people assume gratuity is synonymous with "tipping if you liked the service", rather than a forced charge that you must pay for the extra whatever they need. Should just charge a "party fee" of $xx.xx.
