Is this normal restaurant BS? (tipping thread 2.0)

unfortunately, there are people that will come in with a group of 10 people and ask for seperate checks... then they stiff.
chicago is 15% with 5 or more
places where i live, even if we ask for seperate checks, they still throw in gratuity..

My point was they make the gratuity imperative for large parties to ensure their servers don't get stiffed. Some people will work a large party (20-30 ppl) and then get $10-20 total in tips... when they might not have been able to take any more tables that night. That's not fair at all, but people ARE cheap and WILL do this to their servers, sometimes even if the service is fine, because they don't like the restaurant's prices or whatever.

It's a safegaurd for the waiters/waitresses. To the OP, better to lose the 3% you POTENTIALLY were going to leave extra than to lose an entire tip or most of it for several parties. I'd hate to work a party like that the whole night, skip all the other tables that were being rotated, then get stiffed with a shitty tip... you just wasted your whole workday, not just 1 table.

i have dine and dashed before, but it was at denny's and it was because they guy was a big POS, could not get a single order right, everyones drinks were empty for 10 mins at a time, didnt really speak a lick of english, and was seen just chatting it up with his buddies the whole time.
we said **** you and denny's and dipped out. that was the only time i have ever done it, and it was only because i was infuriated. i have no problem leaving a nice tip. all you really have to do is a decent job and you will get your 15%. do a better job and you get a bonus.
The only time I dine and dashed was when I was 15years old and hanging out with a couple senior teammates after a football game. We got up and walked out before we even got the bill. Later on, one of my buddies ended up dating the waitress for awhile. She never did realize that we were the guys that skipped the bill on her. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Only poor people worry about how much they leave for tips.
Indeed, it isn't. Plenty of cheap-*** rich people out there, I've worked with many many of them and had to surreptitiously drop a few bucks on the table as we leave, just so I don't feel like an ***...

People who work in the service industry are pathetic losers.

Including the fools in this thread.

You get what I give you. *****.
If it wasn't for those "pathetic losers" you would be cooking your own dinner, which I can only assume is Ramen and Mac & Cheese with a Coors Light.
