Is this normal restaurant BS? (tipping thread 2.0)

I think you should tip the cook. I think they have a bigger influence on the dining experience than the server.
i agree im a sous chef at a country club and i see theese 17 yr old beverage cart chicks walking out with up to $300.00 in tips for a 6 hour shift riding a golf cart selling beer and ill be doing good to make half that in my shift

Yea that always frustrated me busting my butt so the food got out on time and was exactly as they had ordered it, and then making sure any of their mistakes were smoothed over with the cooks or that the mistake on their part didn't take 15 minutes to correct, then watch them make more in one night than I did in my measly 20 hour work week. Oh well some of them servers are pretty good lookers lol and working in downtown Boston aka college town made it more enjoyable.

EDIT: Oh and you gotta remember those 17 year old beverage cart chicks aren't making that $300 purely in their service and friendliness alone. Serving alcohol instantly ups the tips just cause the guys love it and the more they buy the more they will tip, and in your opinion would you drop $2 to the guy giving you your beer or $5 to the hot blonde doing exactly the same thing.

why didnt yall just apply for their job then?

Place I use to work at a gratuity of 18-22% was added on to parties of 10 or more. A majority of the parties would even tip on top of that. During Christmas a couple years ago... a party's bill was $3,000 and they tipped an extra $1,000 on top of that.

As I said before I can't really go out and in my opinion beg for my wage. Thats pretty much how I see tipping, I'm gonna do the job 100% but I may not have a massive smile on my face or dance around and the extra stuff to actually entertain the guest, just not something I can do, at least on a regular basis. Besides I had plenty of fun in the kitchen and really never got bitter about the servers making more, they were doing something I felt I couldn't really do, plus I could eat more and get free food working in the kitchen which easily made me happy at the end of the night lol.

ok ive never had to setup a dinner for a group of people at a restaurant before. the most people ive went with was 4, so we didnt need any reservations or anything. well its my gf's 21st birthday tomorrow and she wanted to go to a particular restaurant (not even fancy, just a nice place to eat). so we went into the restaurant and asked, if they took reservations, and if so could we get 1 for 11-12 people. they said yes, and said
" There will be 1 check for the table, and a 17% gratuity."

i almost shit a brick. you're telling me, to my face, that you are forcing me to pay 17% gratuity? i do not have a problem with paying this amount, hell i was already gonna do a 20% tip, but TELLING me what i will need to tip the next night?! WTF? i almost told them to **** off, but i couldnt because its where my gf wanted to eat and get drinks at //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

so my question is...is this normal? do they force a certain tip when you make a reservation, or bring more than a few people to dinner? and if my service sucks im still forced to pay the 17%. what kinda shit is this.

/rant

edit: unless im an idiot and gratuity and tip aren't the same thing...
a small bit of advice george......don't put the alcoholic beverages on he check....go to the bar and pay cash for them...they already have inflated prices so don't include it in the bill...just tip the bartender as you buy

Most nicer places are going to put the tip in the bill... especially around here in DC and Baltimore...any fancy(or just even semi nice) place will do that. It stops people form cheaping out and not leaving tips.

this is VERY good advice right here, the bill gets sooo out of hand right away when alcohol gets involved. The server might also not really like this idea either and if they are good friends with the bartender and paying attention you might not get away with it so easily, but if your looking to shed $20-30 in tip money on a large party then its most definitely worth it.

thats hats nice about being a bartender. you dont have to beg for anything. people beg you. they be nice to you, because you are the one standing between them and the liqour. i've turned people away before. its funny. then usually when they come back next time, they give you even more tip money //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

and as far as the free food deal goes...i can see how that would be a major plus. but then again, i could see how having a bunch of teenagers working in all the resturaunts around the bar you work at could be helpful too. anything i want from any place in the neighborhood to eat, all for the price of a $3 beer //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
