Is this normal restaurant BS? (tipping thread 2.0)

unfortunately, there are people that will come in with a group of 10 people and ask for seperate checks... then they stiff.
chicago is 15% with 5 or more
Where i worked parties of 7 or more i grat'd 18%. Sometimes during business meetings the person who payed was so busy they would not noticed the HIGHLIGHTED grat, and i would make upwards of 30%.

What most people forget is servers have to tip out a fair amount to the bartender, food runner, and sometimes the host.

I had to tip of 3% to bussboy, 2% to food runner. So automatically my 18% was *****. People may not agree with tipping, thats fine with me, just dont sit at my station. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

thats hats nice about being a bartender. you dont have to beg for anything. people beg you. they be nice to you, because you are the one standing between them and the liqour. i've turned people away before. its funny. then usually when they come back next time, they give you even more tip money //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
and as far as the free food deal goes...i can see how that would be a major plus. but then again, i could see how having a bunch of teenagers working in all the resturaunts around the bar you work at could be helpful too. anything i want from any place in the neighborhood to eat, all for the price of a $3 beer //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
**** straight, cooks and bartenders are the FIRST people you need to make friends with at a restaurant. I used to love going in on off days, eat a meal (30% off employee discount) and a couple of beers, oh wait my bill shows I had 3 waters //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif;) People always asked me why I would go into work on off days just to eat, can't beat $10 (including tip) for a filling meal plus drinks and what not.

What is a sous chef?
A sous chef is basically a trained prep cook . First step on the "chef" ladder. While the executive chef plans the menu and pulls down big bucks , the sous chef's make a lot less and do most of the work. THen also get to deal with the *****ing and *** chewing from the executive chef //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

no doubt. im a conservative bartender too. people who arent regulars, bad tippers, ***holes..etc ill short them on alcohol just alittle. whos gunna notice whether you put 4/5 of a shot in, or a whole shot during a pour. but ill short them, do that on 40 or 50 drinks throughout the night..come in on your off day, or at the end of your shift after bar closed, and have a few drinks on the house. already paid for //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

or if im not in the mood to drink or wanna get home, or have enough "saved up" for me at the end of the night, ill slipped the other paid off alcohol to my regulars. or just save it, and that makes me look good as an employee. making the house alittle extra money.

everyone wins.

Yeah for real. The place I work now, we're actually allowed to drink beer for free off the draft while on the clock and food is free too.

Olive Garden around here does 18% if more than 8 people. They typically lose a bit from me by doing that. I personally think that it's stupid to tell people how much they're supposed to tip. I worked as a tour guide for a while and I busted my butt to get tips (and I did well) but when a group of Australians (who don't tip - it's not their culture) showed up, we never told them they needed to.

If the service sucks in a place like that, I ask them to remove the gratuity and leave it on my own. By law, you aren't required to leave a tip so if you ask, they have to remove it. They just know that you're going to feel uncomfortable doing it and probably wont. I've done it once cause the service was flat terrible.

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/bsflag.gif.21f42eccd34b7d1eb1608fb1b59b69c3.gif It is policy at some places to have gratuity added in to partes of 8 or more. If you don't approve of it, don't eat there.

This is true, but if you ask for it to be removed, it will be. It might be a restaurant policy, however a gratuity is a gratuity. It is not required.

Say for example you go somewhere to eat and you are unhappy with your steak. The right thing to do (usually) would be to discount the steak or take it off of the bill. It's the same when a gratuity is added as part of the check of large parties. It doesn't have to be taken off, but if somebody wanted it taken off it could probably be arranged. The bill represents the restaurant's food and services... services being the tip.

Think about it like paying labor when your car gets worked on. You pay for parts and labor. It is stated up front how much labor is going to cost. Just because somebody did a "bad job" you can't ask them to take the labor off.

Exactly if your not planning on tipping there is a McDonald's right up the street. I just always feel bad knowing if they don't get tips they are only making $2.16 an hour or something which generally becomes nothing with taxes and such. If they do a respectable job ya gotta tip em at least something as it is their paycheck.
