Is there really such a thing as SQ subs?

I don't agree. I've heard 6.5" mids go down to 40hz and sound great.
Many have 8"s down to 20hz.
ok most normal 6.5's and 8's then. i know there are some exceptions. i know the extremis can get pretty low for it's size. but take most 6.5's from a comp set and cross below 80hz/12db or 60hz/24db and try to get them loud while maintaining SQ.

Who's to say whats normal these days?

Why do they have to get loud? If I don't listen to my music loud it's pretty easy to deal with crossing them a bit lower. Currently have my 6.5s running full with only the low pass from the passives on them. They get loud enough for me and don't approach break-up. They're not really "normal" though.

Something needs to reproduce the 20hz-80hz range...
IDMAX's are a really popular SQ sub
sub-bass would be anywhere between 0-63Hz... above 63Hz is where most everyone starts to consider it to be in the mid-bass range. and as far as everything below 20Hz, just because you cant hear it, doesnt mean it isnt there //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

if your really into SQ what music do you listen to that has a 20hz note? Rap is really the only thing I can think of that has anything close to that. Im not saying theres a right or a wrong, im just asking, couldent you reat a very nice SQ set up without a sub?
i know everyone else has already said it, but this just made you look like a huge moron... pick up a SQ judging CD, any of the spies CD's, tool, a perfect circle, linkin park, just to name a few... rap is not the only genre with low sub-bass information in it.

I wasent saying its the only genre with low bass, I was just saying from what Iv heard personally rap is the only thing that goes that low, seeings how I dont listen to alot of rock, mainly country and rap (good mix..I know.)

There's a lot of low bass in some very SQ recordings. If you want to have fun shaking the hell out of your ride with some uncharacteristic music pick up a copy of Bachbusters by Don Dorsey and crank Toccata Fugue.

My AA poly mids play down to 30hz at decent volumes and are crossed over at 50hz with a high pass filter with a 6dB slope.

Don't forget that the environment plays a huge role in frequency response.

However, I now have a sub getting about 100 watts and it sounds much better than the 6.5s trying to dig down deep. Do I need the sub? No. Does it help with the sound quality and range of my system? Yes.

Oh, and I bet you couldn't name a single rap song that has noticeable content at 20hz. I do know songs that do but none of them are rap.

I never said there was a rap song with a 20hz note in it. I said that rap is the genre that I listen to with the lowest notes. The closest I can think of off hand is White girl which drops to 28hz I believe, correct me if im wrong.

usually subs with an EBP around 50 do well in sealed boxes (which usually has better sound quality due to a much flatter frequency response) vs subs with an EBP of around 100, which usually like to be in ported boxes (which usually has a more peaky frequency response)

divide the drivers Fs by Qts to find out its EBP

29hz, "change up" by Fabolous goes down to 27hz. And doesn't Lil' Whyte's "Hood run down" goes down to 22hz with the bass check in the beginning?

Anyway, there are SQ subs, just really no SQ amps
