Is there really such a thing as SQ subs?

there is plenty in rock and metal and classical and jazz and the list goes on with stuff below 80 hz.
6.5" mids really shouldn't be crossed below 80hz,

8" mids really shouldn't be crossed below maybe 50-60hz.

so you will need something to play from those values down to at least 25-30hz with some authority.
I don't agree. I've heard 6.5" mids go down to 40hz and sound great.

Many have 8"s down to 20hz.

if your really into SQ what music do you listen to that has a 20hz note? Rap is really the only thing I can think of that has anything close to that. Im not saying theres a right or a wrong, im just asking, couldent you reat a very nice SQ set up without a sub?
If you have the money you can get a really good pair of comps. But the lower frequencies wont have authority just like everyone else said. You might get some decent base with proper deadening, but you just wont feel the base like you would if you had a subwoofer stage.

Did he really just say that?

Lol at this thread
since your such an expert and cant help someone learn what was the point of posting. Maybe you could inform me of some things to look for in the TS parameters to spot a SQ sub, since I plan on doing a SQ set up in the future...

Is there ever a point to ask questions on this forum. I ask questions to learn, they may sound newbish to you, but thats how you learn. Some one with some prior knowledge on SQ set ups, could you speak up, and tell me what to look for.

The idmax is somthing like 93db efficient at 50hz and would make an excellent choice for a sq sub for bass guitar.

If your system is tuned correctly, you would not be asking what music has a 20hz note. You would be talking about how well the sub blends with the front stage without drawing attention to itself and how well it compliments the frequencies that the front stage cannot play.

Tuning is one of the most misunderstood aspects of car audio and 95% of people do not get it right, 3% that think they have it right, do not have the processor or crossover capability to tune it right in the first place and the 2% that found audio nirvana are few and hard to come by.. Most people think slapping a 18-24db/oct crossover on a sub / component set with a crossover point of 40-50hz is the way to go which leads to a soundstage that blends like crap usually and that has weak midbass as most all 2 way component sets that can play around 40-50hz with authority have crappy midrange & sets that do midrange justice are a bid on the thin side below 65hz. These people tend to overcompensate trying to add midbass bass by turning the sub up which leads to a huge mismatch level wise between the two. There is no magic slope or crossoverpoint for anyone but once you find the sweet spot, it is heaven.

Anyways enough for my rant, but yes a sub can sound uber musical and add tremendous value to a system if implemented properly.

your comment about rap being the only genre that has anything close to a 20htz note in it is pretty ignorant.
Thats the only thing I listen to that gets down there. I listen to rock, but it never has a 20hz note in it. I also listen to country, witch has some low notes in to but I dont think there 20hz.

I have heard that the best place to run your sub in a sq car is underneath your dash.

many SQ installs have the sub sealed up front. I remember seeing on car that had a 12 upfront. It just creates a proper front stage.
I plan to run a realy nice sq setup in my future car when I get a good job. It is easy to be loud, but its hard to sound good.

I have no experience in sq setups, but I plan to get it. And I know there is ALOT of math involved.
