Is it bad to overpower a sub???

I wanted to know if overpowering a sub is good or bad? I just got a sub rated at 400 watts rms and I'm giving it 600. Will this damage the sub or is it ok? The sub is a Pioneer premier 12 in a sealed enclosure with a jbl 600.1 sub amp.

my DD 1508's had an RMS of 450...I ran 1800 rms to them without issues...so I guess it depends on your sub quality....

sealed subs tend to handle power a little bit better due to the pressure of the box and cone control.

also, the ratings on the subs are not always accurate. I feed my type-R's much more than rated power, ported.

when you see smoke and smell a funny smell....you're not giving it enough power. crank it up ftw

Nope //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif...You always have the extra power available for a burp...if it's just a couple hundred watts, Id go for it, shouldnt see any issue unless you start clipping (aka, keep your bass boost down)

but when the funny smells come....don't say i didn't warn you. you can be over powering a sub and not have it clip, but as a general rule, pioneer-saturn, i would have to agree.

nah, overpowering is fine, just make sure you don't underpower it as this will cause instant subgopoof syndrome

yeah keep the bass boost down...as told above...that is your subs worst enemy

I don't want to sell it but could use the extra cash. I spent $30 on the pioneer and $300 on the treo so if I could get anywhere close to the same quality from the pioneer I was considering it.

ah touche...still keep the treo. the quality is x times better, and wait until you can trade or buy a new sub....trust me youll be pissed when you sell your good sub and then blow your bad one and you're stuck with none...then you have to buy again and it's a pain. stick with quality
