Unfortunately this is one of those situations where you actually have to use some common sense.
On my car - my alternator output stud is about 18" from my battery (+). The only thing it MIGHT rub/wear the 8 ga wire I added is the fuzzy hood insulation panel and any wear that may cause over time is clearly visible whenever I open the hood.
In my case there is no reason at all to fuse that wire.
IF I saw any POSSIBLE scenario that wire could be grounded I would most certainly fuse it.
When in doubt, fuse it.
