install help

so i have installed an amp and sub with a factory head unit. the car already has a stock amp and sub. so i ran an adapter from the stock sub (stock sub, disconnected) to get my rcas to the aftermarket amp and continued the amp install as normal. my dilemma is with gains on the amp alll the way down.. the sub runs via the controls on the stock head unit. is that normal??

for example.. bass all the way down on head unit.. gains all the way down on amp.. sub does nothing.. but if i turn the bass up on the head unit and amp gains remain at 0.. the sub runs... and visa versa. normal? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

how can i fix the problem?
