I've been using my head unit's crossover (80hz) for a while now. I liked using it instead of using the amplifier crossovers because sometimes I remove my sub when going on trips (make room for more stuff), and a flick of the switch gives me bass back in my front speakers (good enough for the car trip).
Well, I started to get unhappy w/ the way it was sounding... bass sounded localized at higher freq's (70hz+) and I seemed to be lacking low end (mid bass) response from my 5x7s. So, I turned off the HU crossover and set the crossovers on my speaker and sub amps @~60hz. Things sound MUCH better.
Just a heads up for those sticking w/ the standard 80hz setting. Try lower settings and see how it sounds. I have amplified kicker components, so I'm not sure if stock speakers would allow such a change.
I wish my HU would have had a setting under 80hz (specifically 60hz)... then I'd be set.
