If I buy a SMD DD1 Distortion Detector...

Mehh he will be at my house this weekend to stay for some classes in sport so I will use for free or he sleeps in his car..... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

If you can't tell that your audio is distorting by ear, you need to quit car audio and take up knitting.
elitist attitudes like that is what gives car audio forums a bad name.

seriously? probably 1% of the population can identify clipping (especially when subs are located in an enclosed trunk) - which is further complicated by clipping that is inherent in most modern recordings. so they are supposed to recognize the difference (by untrained ear) between recording clipping and gain clipping?

the DD-1 is for people who cannot do simple math nor have the tools necessary to scope outputs. it is good for determining where distortion occurs out of head units, even factory systems for OEM integration.

are we to say that people who prefer literature over math should not listen to music?

few people who DIY actually have the knowledge/skill/ability to execute it well - that goes for everything (home improvement, car mechanics, stereos, etc.). but we know they will anyway, so let's equip them with something they can use - something as simple as an idiot light.

L O L. Lets sell the masses snake oil so they cannot use their brain to figure out what they should know as core information if they plan to succeed in car audio. This is by far the DUMBEST product i've ever heard of. The fact that people are falling for this makes me giggle. PT Barnum said there is a sucker born every day. There are apparenly plenty on ca.com and SMD, including you sir.

All I know is I set my gains by ear and a dmm and it sounded good used the dd1 and it sounds better if that's snake oil then I'm all in

your inability to comprehend how something works doesn't make it stupid, pretty much the other way around. a circuit that detects clipping then enables an LED is not snake oil.

it's analogous to using a non-contact AC voltage detector instead of a DMM. you get much less information, but the red light tells you the minimum information required.

our ears are terrible instruments. using our ears to set gains is like using a rock and a stick to dig a hole. you can't calibrate your ear, sensitivity varies with both frequency and exposure, and everyone's hearing response is different. i have 1/3 octave FSPL measurements of both of my ears - but they are representative of that moment in time only. if i listened to a stereo for a few hours and retook the test - the results would be drastically different. i can recommend books on audiology if you are interested in learning more.

I've been tested and have 100% excellent hearing. I'm sorry if you don't. If you really need some snake oil to feel better about your install, then go for it. I'm simply not one to buy into this stupdity. If people are not bright enough to use a DMM and an Oscope, then maybe they shouldn't be dealing with car audio to begin with. I just call it how I see it.

i would agree if it was a small nicth of smd nutthugers that were only useing this thing but now well respected shops are starting to use it,its a great product i dont care who sells it

I have one and i i am happy with it. haven't had any issues with my speakers anymore since i use this. Like it has been said before this thing is great for someone that can't do math or have the right tools to do it with!

Ill probably buy one and rent it out. Would be really simple rules. Pics with name and date before every shipment, $150 deposit, you pay shipping both ways. Once its back to me in good order, deposit will be refunded minus $10 renting fee. $10 rent fee would be for week long periods (5 buisness days). Sound fair?
