i need SQ

i have an L7 the box is 2.5 cubes at 35 hz. im sick of the set up. im really really aiming for sound quality. i need something to just fill the void in where the speakers cant reproduce. i listen to alot older classic rock. david bowie, journey, guns and roses and some phil collins. i do listen to rap every so often, ive lost interest in hip hop since noone can rap or come up with anything of there own now. i was looking at JL's w3, im not sure how good this sub is. also how do you think a single sub at around 500wrms sealed would do in an explorer. recommendations and comments of the w3 would be great, thanks.

try a lower tuned box, around low 30s?

500watts I'd do an AQ SDC2.5, 1k of power I'd do a FI Q, both in ported boxes. I listen to everything you listed, plus a lot of 80's metal and know that both of the subs I mentioned can sound very good, but also get pretty loud when you want to.

You wont be thrilled with the output of a Single 12 sealed coming from a ported L7, unless you a serious about a true flat in car response. But most of us like a slightly exagerrated bottom end...I would run something like an IDQ or SE tuned low around 28 hz. Still get good output but awesome SQ. Going with a slightly smaller box, say 1.5 cubes tuned to 28hz will have a similar response to sealed but will gain you extra output. Best of both worlds.
