Well I got an interview to be an installer at a car audio shop on monday.

Well my question is for those of you have been an installer or an installer is what do they like to have in a person to hire them? Besides just "experience".

I plan on going in and telling I know to how install, Ive done several installs in my car and friends. I know what ohms are and the how to wire in series and parallel. Also im going to say that I am a car audio competitor and have placed in several comps. And im going to tell them that Ive worked lots of construction so I know how to use tools and work with my hands etc.

So to those of you that work in audio shops does that sound pretty good?

Thanks

you need to tell them why you chose their shop to work at out of all the others (and no location isnt a good reason). you need to show them that this is what you want to do for a long time, not just a "job".

well not just that you wanted to work with audio...but that shop in particular.

you can say something like, since youve been into car audio when you were X age, you have seen that shop, and have always wanted to work, especially after seeing local guys cars who have had equipment installed by them, and the work really impressed you.

say you are always willing to learn more, and are looking forward to learning from there top installers....or some shit like that. just BS them. thats how everything works.

here is how life works:

"Its not who you know, its who you blow."

indeed make sure you let them know details on the installs you have done and what you know you could do as well as be honest on installs that you have not done as the title car audio installer is not only audio it encompasses security/remote start, video as well as (in some cases) random other electronic shit that people want installed.....

and honestly the hardest part of the job when just starting out is figuring out how to take every car apart

don't focus all on install stuff, being an installer means dealing with customers, all sorts of them, good and bad.

You need to also convince the hiring body that you are able to deal with customers and that you are an outgoing individual that cares about what some one wants out of their car. Nobody likes assholes like certain TV personalities that gives the same ****ing shit to every customer he gets, some people like certain things and you need to be able to extract that info and accomodate.

In short, be nice and honest, don't stretch the truth and try to impress with knowledge you may or may not have, if they ask you how to do a reverse polarity lock system and you don't know how, tell him you don't know, but you are willing to learn and will do some research and learn how to do it.

Even if you have installed "many" friends setups, you also need to know how to sell because the fact is, what the people on the sales floor failed to sell the customer, becomes your job to get them to buy. You need to know how to upsell, add-on items, personability, customer care, knowledge (duh) and knowing how to deal with disgruntled customers because its going to happen. So hopefully you have some good retail experience and if you do you better make sure you tell them that. Other than all that good luck.
