How to Set this Up???

Hey there,

i just bought a used rockford fosgate 1500 amplifier for $250.

in the near future ill be buying 2 sa 12's 600rms each, and going to have futureshop build me a custom box for them.

im wanting to power these to their full potential "eventually", but for now i just want them to sound decent.

i drive a 2006 chevrolet malibu lt v6, i currently have 4guage wire ran through my car, stock alt, stock batt.

is what i have now good enough to power these subs with the bass on 1 or something for now,

and also, what will i need to upgrade to get these to run to their full potential, and how would i have to wire it.

Drop the 4 gauge for 0....look into the big 3 and a better batt

Whats the VC configuration on the subs?

We need to know exactly which RF amp you have and the coil config of the subs your planning on getting (Dual 1 ohm, Dual 2 ohm, or Dual 4 ohm).

What do you mean by the bass on 1?

yes its the t1500, the subs ill be buying are dual 4 ohm, sundown audio 12s

You'll have to wire the voice coils in parallel and the subs in parallel to make a 1 ohm load.

And also, you'll have to set up the gain to put out around 1200 instead of the full 1500. If you need help doing this just let me know and ill post a link for you.

First off, you'll need a DMM (Digital Multi-Meter). You can find them at Walmart, Radioshack...etc.

Second, you'll need to use this equation = Voltage = SQRT(Power x Resistance)

V=SQRT( 1200x1)

V=SQRT(1200)

V=36.64

So what you would do is, connect the dmm (turn it to AC) to the pos and neg of your amp and turn the volume on your headunit all the way up (the absolute loudest you will ever listen to it) and adjust the gain until the dmm reads 36.64.

so 36 would be the number that i can run my amp and subs at constantly while driving with ac on, heat on? how do i know when its too much for my alternator to handle

ive been told its best to run 0 guage and use a splitter to run 4guage to the amp or something. instead of just 4 guage

Nooo. Reread what I typed.

AC = Alternating Current.

DC = Direct Current.

The 36.63 would the the AC Voltage on the highest volume setting you will listen to.

Example = My headunit volume goes up to 35, and the highest volume I listen to is 28. So I would turn the volume to 28 on my headunit, connect the DMM pos and neg to the amp's pos and neg, and adjust the gain until the dmm reads 36 volts.
