There is no specific amp, it's just a question I came up with through searching. I was confused, that method is based entirely on given t/s that you have to believe.

I find it EXTREMELY diffucult to detect distortion (i.e. a clipped signal) from a subwoofer.
The only way to properly do it would be with an o-scope. What amp is it that you are wondering about? Someone can most likely give you a rough estimate of its output, from experience...

well maybe he wouldnt be able to tell sub distortion when it hits him in the face, from a highly overrated amp that most likely clips like a *****, but at any rate, that is a very very accurate way to set gain, and without the price or an oscope

No, no, no my friend...

Will it work? Yes, but it is very easy to enduce clipping with an amatuer ear.

Seriously, just by an o-scope on e-bay. I got my BK Precision 2120 for $40. Sure it may not be as portable as those nice handheld Vellemans, but it is incredibly useful.

i think what he means by volts is the reading on the dmm. just say if your formula equals 10 volts. you turn up the gain and at 8 volts it all of the sudden jumps up well above 10, you can be fairly certain the amp is clipping, so you'll want to leave your gain back at 8 volts.
