cheapest way is by ear. play your test tone and turn up the gain til you hear distortion then back off a bit.

to know for sure you will have to purchase an oscope.

I was always told to use a dmm/o scope, but never did....I always did it by ear, and its worked for me.....it may not be perfectly set, but close enuff is fine for me as long as I'm not clipping.

If you have an o-scope, you don't need the dmm.
