Horizontal Line arrays revisited

I been around for quite a while on various forums... I would like to start a topic dealing with horizontal line arrays in cars. Now some of you might ask why a line array and to me the answer is simple. In an ongoing world where more and more is being done to retain stock looks the horizontal line array would be ideal. What I plan on doing is having a horizontal line array the length of entire dash. This would take car of the critical midrange areas and also would not require much work as it just mounts on each side of the dash. I am thinking of having the speakers cover 150hz - 2k.

There are also many drawbacks to this as:

1. Speaker size is greatly limited

2. You would need time alignment as each speaker arrives at different times.

3. Lobing would be an issue as well.

 
This idea is a recipe for an acoustic nightmare. Line arrays work in a stadium, theater, concert hall or outdoors, or even possibly in large and regular shaped rooms; but in confined space of a car it'll be a disaster. If you just want to get as loud as possible just cover every inch of your dash and doors with PA mids and horns. That's a popular strategy in the deep south.

Apply time alignment to two front speaker channels in standard locations, then EQ each side to match and you will have a strong center image, provided a whole list of other things are properly addressed in your installation. Any DSP with time alignment, crossovers, and equalization that is at minimum separated for left and right will make this job relatively easy. Learning how to use the DSP is another task that isn't easily explained in a paragraph. There is no need to physically have a speaker(or several speakers) in the dash or next to the dash to get a center stage presence for one listener.

More information, like the basics I requested, would help.

However if we use Ambiophonics we could get very good if not better results! All one would need is a Android, Apple, and or Windows device.

I am just looking at this from an install point of view as to get truely optimum midrange results 250 - 1200hz you would really need to fiberglass or hack the vehicle. The only good midrange results I have had over the years have either been in apillars or dash mounted enclosures.

If you haven't already gotten this idea from his posts on DIYMA you will probably be busy for a few days.

With today's knowledge of acoustics, correct application of DSP, on top of decades of knowledge of best installation practices there is no need whatsoever for line arrays in the car. Since you've given us nearly nothing to judge your current knowledge and past experiences with car audio I don't know what else to tell you. This can't be a one-way discussion.

I thought we were bigger than just seeing who has the biggest sack. For instance Acura has a new technology which employs close to 50 small speakers all located on the dash area. I did and was a member of Diyma for close to 10yrs. Patrick has many great ideas as he comes from my point of view as to why do the norm. My install is going to consist of horns mounted under dash playing from 2k on up (maybe 1.5k) Dash horizontal array playing from 125hz - 2k, subwoofer or subwoofers 30hz - 125hz. The thing about normal thinking is that we never progress! Power is cheap DSP technology is great so why not expand our minds?
