Help :(

So.. to start off, I have a 2000 Cavalier Sedan with the basic stereo system.

I recently purchased all of the necessities to install a decent system into my car.

I started working on it today and things went far from well, first off I bought Boston Acoustic S59 6x9"s for the rear deck. They didn't fit in the stock speaker adapter.

I'm going to have to mount them from the bottom, which isn't that big of a deal.

My question is, is the basic speaker bracket included enough of sealing?

..My next question is, I have an Eclipse CD5000 on the way, right now the stock stereo system is in the car.

After wiring one of the 6x9"s to the stock head unit and hearing it sound like absolute **** due to lack of power, I disconnected it. I then reconnected a the stock speaker; at this time.. I saw a little static shock.. (I forgot to disconnect the battery, GOOD JOB ME). Upon turning my radio on, I have no sound.. in any speakers. The radio powers on and the clock reads, but there's absolutely no sound at all.

Any ideas how to fix this? Is this going to be a problem when my Eclipse CD5000 arrives?

Any other solutions to mounting the 6x9s in the rear deck, other than drilling the holes from a speaker outline?

Either fuses or you crossed the speaker wires causing a direct short.

Check the fuses. When you install your new deck I would run new speaker lines. Usually the stock ones are tiny and troublesome.

You dont have to, but its always a good idea.

Check your fuses and let us know what you find. Might be able to help you more after that. Do you have a DMM(digital multimeter or volt/ohm meter)?

Is there a guide anywhere to running new speaker lines? I'm thinking there was a direct short as well, because there's no external amp that I can find. There's a spot on my fuse panel that says "AMP" but there's no fuse in the actual slot and I'm guessing there never was.

If I caused a direct short, the only solution is to run entirely new speaker?

I'm still a beginner to all of this, but I learn fast when it comes to electronics.

Let me know what's up and I appreciate the help, I checked all the relevant fuses for the radio and none are blown. That was the very first thing I did :p

I don't have a multimeter, but a friend of mine may.

Thanks again for the help.

Sounds to me like you popped your constant power fuse. Back in my newbie days, I was installing a h/u in a Saturn and the same thing happened. When he turned the car on, the radio would power up and eject CD's but no sound.

Since your car is a 2000, does it do the door chimes through the drivers' side speaker? If so, did you order the GM interface? I know they're expensive, but they really make the install quite a bit easier,

Yeah, I got the wiring harness specifically for the car, it was only $25 for me.. got it through a buddy from Crutchfield.

Now that you mention the audible door chimes, I no longer have them for the headlights / keys in ignition etc.

Will the wiring harness fix that? I intended on re-wiring the RCA cable eventually regardless, but I'm short on my budget as it is right now. I just paid off my tuition bill and don't have the cash right now for more quality wire.

I appreciate the help and constant replies guys, helps a lot.

When I ask if the wiring harness would fix "that", I meant would it fix the lack of sound through the speakers. I know the audible chimes are intergrated into the aftermarket harness.

..or will I have to run new RCA wire through the entire car? My new head unit is due within the next week, so I still have some time to figure this out. I have an older Sony Xplod head unit that I was using to test the speakers after I was getting no response from the stock head unit, so I know the speakers work.

Alright, so you got the special harness? If so, you ought to be in good shape as far as door chimes, etc. go.

How did you hook up the Sony head unit to your speakers? Did you plug it into the factory harness? Was the Sony unit recieving power from the same source that the stock head unit was getting power from? The reason I ask is that if the Sony powers up, but the stock unit fails to, then the stock head unit could be dead. Have you checked the constant power fuse for the radio to see if it is blown yet? That would be the first thing I check.

As far as running new speaker wires, it's not absolutely necessary. However, the stock wiring is pretty cheap, thin stuff. If you feel you need to rewire, then a spool of Wal-Mart 18awg (10 bucks) will suffice. Do you plan on running an external amplifier for your speakers or are you going to power them off the Eclipse?

I never disconnected the stock, it's still intact in the dash. I actually rigged the Sony up in a pretty bootleg way just to test it's value. It's not wired to any sort've remote wire, it's running straight off the battery atm. with the RCA outs running to an amp that powers a sub box ( I was testing the box ;p ).

I didn't want to rip apart my dash to install the Sony, then rip it apart again to install the Eclipse, lol.

I plan on letting the Eclipse power my 4x6s in the doors and the 6x9s in the rear deck, with the secondary output running to through my amp to power the bandpass.

The stock unit powers up, but there's absolutely no sound coming through the front panel (even with fade set all the way to front), or the rear deck (if the speakers are connected to it - as it is now, they're just mounted and unwired since I'm waiting to see if it's needed to rewire the entire car)

Right now, the Sony is just siting on my passenger seat, all wired up and running to the amp. So I tested the 6x9s with the Sony and the Amp.

My goal in the end is to let the eclipse power the 4x6s in my door and the 6x9s in my rear deck. Then run the secondary output to the amp and let that handle the box.

...That seems like a lot of rambling, I guess I should've explained my situation more in depth to clarify some crap.

Basically, -

My stock head unit is still in the dash, wired up etc all factory style. It powers up, the clock works and the LCD displays the band, etc etc.. but there's absolutely no sound coming through it.

Even the door chimes, audible alerts for headlights etc no longer come out of the speakers.

As far as the fuses go, what're the relevant ones to double check? I checked the constant power one for the radio and a few others and they weren't blown.

...Where, that was a lot of shit. Hope you guys check back in on this!

Thanks again, in advance.

Eh who cares probally blew up your stock HU if you have no blown fuses lol. Just don't blow your CD5000 cuz that is a PRICEY unit (I know i own one). BTW, that is quite a fancy HU to have and not run an amp on your speakers lol.

Yeah, I got the HU through retail accommodations so it wasn't that expensive for me. I just don't want to repeat error and if I have to take any rewiring steps, I want to get it done before the HU gets here. (Within the next 8 days)

I have a few other amps that I picked up from a family member, but yeah.. as stated earlier, I'm a beginner to self installs.. so taking everything one step at a time for now. (They're also not that quality of amps) One is a Dual XiA 2460 and the other is some Boss 4 channel amp @ 100w/channel.

My biggest worry is installing the Eclipse CD5k when it comes and still having no sound, is it possible that can happen?

I guess more than anything I'm trying to troubleshoot early, heh.

Yeah, I'm sure the speakers worked - I tested them. I guess the only way to know if the wiring is fried is trial and error, eh? That sort've blows, lol. Oh well, the learning process for this is tedious but worth it.. I'm sure it gets easier each install.

As long as I learn from my mistakes, I'm not doing too bad.

I was hoping there was an easier way to determine whether or not my wiring was fried.
