Help with rca bass knob

Hello so I just installed a rca bass knob and then set my gains as well. I've noticed that when I set my bass knob in between 3-5 the amp clip light and protect light stay on but when I got pass 5 it fixes it self and plays like normal. (I set my amp using a multi meter i have a oscilloscope coming tomorrow) please help.
