Help me pick a DMM

I bought a DMM the other week. It has a AC/DC V setting, but no setting for 200 or 500 that I can tell. I looked in the Owner's Manual it's doesn't say anything about switching from 200 to 500 in there either. Will this still work without the selection of settings? I bought a 60$ Dmm figuring it would do anything I would need it to do. For now, and down the road if any bigger projects came up around the house, wiring, cars, etc...

I don't know anything about DMM's at the moment and there isn't anyone at the store that knows anything aboutem either. I want to buy a good one so I don't have to buy another one again. Here's a link to Craftsman DMM page. It doesn't have to be a Craftsman. It can be different brand, but I'd like a DMM that will take a beating if it has to. I'm gonna return it to Sears. Can you guys help me pick out the best one for the money, that you can find with a $60.00 limit?

how bout a graphing meter? get a snap on vantage off ebay for like 200 for the old ones.... i just got the vantage pro its like 3k after im done paying for it.....

$200 is too steep for me, I wanna stay in the $60 and under range.

You could pic up something like a Fluke 77 on ebay that will take a beating and always be there for you.

i usually have a fluke or 2 for sale...i pick them up by the dozen at auctions and sell them cheap on here. I may have some in the near future

In the manual of your Craftsman meter, does it say its "auto ranging"?

If it does, you dont need to set the specific voltage range, it reads the voltage without presetting the range you want.

That meter would be fine for your use.

Thanks for the replys. Yep, it says AutoRanging Digital Multimeter. Model# 82175. So all I should have to do is turn it to AC/DC V, hit the button for AC and it should be ok? Is that right?
