Has anyone used SUEDE on a headliner before?

I'm thinking about layering COMFORT SUEDE (from Select Products) on my SUV's headliner.

Is there anything I should know about before installing this? I know that Suede is not as pliable Heat Formable Vinyl -- so how should I follow the forms of the peaks and canyons in the headliner? Also, what is the best adhesive I should use?

Electronics I'm ok with. Fabric, I'm such a NOOB.

just get some 3m super77 adhesive.

you might be able to stick it right to your existing headliner. if not, get some of that foam crap at the local fabric store and put that on there.

your hardest part is going to be getting the shape right.

might wanna look into taking your existing liner out, and making a paper mache mould - and then sticking a layer of foam, then a layer of suede.

you can get microsuede from your fabric stores, im not sure if it will be wide enough tho.

DO NOT use super77 on headliners. If you read the can, it specifically says that. I personally would ditch every can of that I had. I have never used comfort suede before, so I cannot comment on that, but I do know that Texsuede is as close to real suede that I have seen, and I have used it/sold it for many headliners. Yes, you can use it (suede fabric) on headliners, and yes, you can glue it to the factory cloth - just not with super77.

Matt,

Interesting and thanks for the heads up. Actually, I decided to treat myself and went with genuine Alcantara Automotive UltraSuede Panel. The one from Italy, not USA, not Japan.

So... may I ask what is your recommendation for adhesive for trim and top then?

i was wondering the same thing. what would you use to glue it to the existing headliner then? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

The best around, in a spray can is the DAP Weldwood High Temp. Not just hte regular weldwood...make sure it says high temp on it. I have had good results with PRO brand, but usually only see that at upholstery shops.

..and the Alcantara...WOOT, nice stuff! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif

Matt,

Thanks, I'll look out for the DAP Weldwood High Temp; I have some areosol cans of Select Product's ADH225 High Temp 225 Adhesive (AEROSOL Contact Cement Adhesive for High heat applications) so I'm wondering if that's the same stuff as the DAP. Anyways, I'll look around the local stores and see it they carry this particular item.

I was THIS close to buying the 3M Super 77 until I saw your post. Can you tell me why the Super 77 is not recomended for this application? Is it because of flamability ratings?

Sounds like that stuff from Select will work just fine. Super77 is not high heat resis, which I believe would be the main problem. But, even 3M doesnt recommend it, like I said, read the label.
