Lol bro, your whole paragraph shows how little you know about depression and it's diagnosis. Straight out of the DSM handbook (What Psychologists use to diagnose disorders, in case you don't know)
"E. The symptoms are not better accounted for by Bereavement, i.e., after the
loss of a loved one, the symptoms persist for longer than 2 months or are
characterized by marked functional impairment, morbid preoccupation with
worthlessness, suicidal ideation, psychotic symptoms, or psychomotor
retardation."
Someone who may be sad, suicidal, etc due to an ENVIRONMENTAL cause or trigger such as losing your job, GF cheating, etc is NOT depressed. Sadness in those cases is considered NORMAL human behavior. The only way ENVIRONMENTAL causes will count as towards depression is in longer time spans (2 months isn't set in stone, it really depends)

Don't get me wrong, I havn't gone completely bonkers, Stage 3 cancer is serious and *****, and I'd rather deal with Depression, but you seem to think it's just people who cant get over themselves.
The fact of the matter is your BRAIN has chemicals (Get that far in school yet?) which regulate mood, happiness, anger, etc. When you're brain has lower than average amounts of serotonin, dopamine or norepinephrine, or they reuptake slower than average, you will have issues. Your brain is a machine, it is mechanical, and when you are running low on "Fluids" it's not good for your "Engine".
And honestly, it really depends on person who's depressed on if they have it worse or not, I'd say MOST don't have it worse than people with stage 3 cancer, however take a 16 year old kid who lost everyone in his family when he was 7 in a car crash that he remembers (yes this timespan for an environmental cause could validate a depression diagnosis) vs someone who has cancer and has a family to support them in hard times.
Either way, why did you even bring up Cancer? Afterall, this is a thread about depression. I'd understand if the OP had asked something along the lines of ... "Have any of you delt with cancer?" But I'm sure you would just come in and tell him to get over himself and that "There's people in the hospital who had their nuts shot off who had it worse"
