going for SQ with balls - help with some things

ok, i got the EQ and Crossover pending a deal. dual 31band + a Xover with; HPF(24db\oct) + BANDPASS + SSF - all rackmounts.

i got the COMP2 deal pending. the viper was shipped on the 18th. got the kodas. im about to order 2 tempests (doing an install for a kid and getting him one as well) box plans in progress (girlfriend has same car) have the HU, its all comming together. look out for a comprehensive project log from me very shortly.

it will take me a while to get everything in place. im going to take my time with this one. so it might take a while. but there will be plenty of pages to look at.

i just sent out the email to the guy selling me the crossfire stuff (3 rackmounts ! woo!) and he said my price was good, but shipping costs will determine if he will accept. i may pay a few bucks more (no problem) and im calling audiolife today about the comp2's. and adire maybe next week about the tempest.

thanks for all the help guys. specially squeak, audiolife, and anyone else who has contributed to my knowledgebase and getting me on the right track.

cool if you like ill draw out how to make some covers and such. i liked using tweed over the mouths (poke a few small holes it it) smooths them right out. reg grill cloth is ok too .

little update. i got all you see in my signature except the horns - and they are supposed to be shipped out today.

im just looking to get a car to fit it all into now (hopefully one with tint and a freaking alarm)

heres a sneek preview (the viper amp is behind the crossfire boxes, and the RE SE 10 is just about for sale, and im selling my 6.5\5.25 cdt sets to a local friend to pay for alot of this stuff)

i kinda wanna take the grey plate off the directed amp, and sandblast the paint, and polish it to match the viper 550.6...

wouldnt that be sweet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

we shall see. ive already "modded" it... it will all be shown in the project log. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/peace.gif.2db28b618ed8d1964ebbe2f5021d2c39.gif

soon my friends. soon.

Let me know how this turns out. Im doing something similar, a 3-way horn setup (cd1pro horns). Audax PR170 for midrange (due to their incredibly high efficiency to keep up with the horns) and IDQ 8's for midbass, in a 1st gen blazer. I considered a 2-way also, as people say the IDQ's will play up to 1000hz no problem. But after talking to some serious SQ competitors from ID who tried the same setups in the past, I decided a midrange 3-way setup would be best. Maybe the Koda's will play up to 1k better than Im told the IDQ's really do. Id love to change to a 2-way if it works, let me know.

BTW, ECA is where most of the people from Image Dynamics, the company and the team, hang out. If you want ID horn and staging/imgaing/SQ information, that's the place to go. I saw your post their didn't get any responses. The trick is to put 'horns' in the title, you'll get replies. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

you shouldnt have to do a 3 way at all. my first set of horns were the cd-1e and i had no trouble with it. key to a REALLY AWESOME horn set up and an ok one (id still rather have an ok horn car than an awesome norm speaker car though) is tweaking. it took me 3 weeks to get the cd-1e to sound pretty good. just gotta fiddle with them 15 min a day on the eq. if you have access to an rta you will see or notice if you boost an area on the horns another area (usually 1/3 to 2/3 of an octive) will drop even though you didnt touch it. when you are doing this (its not hard not tedious) play material you are very used too.

I own an RTA. I know about tweaking horns.

You misunderstand the crux of my post. I know where horns reach, the problem is in getting a good midbass/midrange speaker that will play authoritative midbass (like the koda and idq) and still reach the approx 1k you'll need for the horns. Yes I know people say the koda's play that high no problem, but they also say that about the idq's, which is true. The idq's will play to 1k no problem, but adding a midrange speaker makes the 250-1k range sound alot better. Is this the case with the Koda's? I dont know, hence asking req for input when he's done.

I hope that's more clear.

well. im gonna have the comp2's wich are larger and will play lower, so the 600~1000 range will be better filled with the comp2's low end anyway. so i dont know how much help my finindings will be to you //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Actually my pro's will play lower than 1kz too. Im confident your results will be close to what mine would be. Besides, Im considering upgrading to the new CD2 neo's anyway. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

i have only heard 1 car in my life pull off what you are wanting to acheive ( again im not saying it cant be done but rather to why id be sceptical in doing so) remember the mac caddy? larry chysner? (spell check) he used to judge my car at shows his installer and mine were going to do a few cars together before mine got burned out on it. larry pulled it off with ALOT of processing he had a basic 3 way set up all up front including the sub. i base my set ups on the theory of super position (im not mister tonal but i can pick apart directional sounds rather well) too many point sources ruin the seamlessness of using the horn. mark eldridge also pulled it off but his horns are about as rediculous (lol) as richard clarks they are freaking huge throated and in a very not normal location (look at his dashand i know he has processors out the ying yang that he wont show you or explain but he is still an awesome guy). the best over all i had set up with my cd-3's were a vifa 7 but they lacked midbass smack, so i went with an idq8 d2 and it was a little rougher around the edges until i retuned. over the whole time i was switching from welded steel enclosers to sealed ,and open ended kicks. what ended up being the best was open ended kicks with a wide trim on the back to help break up the waves from back to front of the kicks. if you went 3 way crossover points and slopes would be real tricky. dont think i dont see what you are saying or think im telling you it cant be done it is ALOT harder to pull off for the reasons im saying.

Uhm, what? hehe Are you saying 3-ways are a bad idea? If so, talk to most everyone who runs them on team Image Dynamics. Most of those guys tried the 2-way setup a few years ago. Again, not with the Koda's though.

hmm eric stevens used to and actually taught me how to tune my car. if they are mini horns i imagine you might need that, and they are pretty big into those now. i personally dont like those. my next horn set will actually be a bigger body with a MUCH hotter driver. again i base my set up on superposition and had alot of success as did probably the top 4 or 5 sq cars of all time, if the iasca rules are more lax on imaging now (which i knew they were headed that way in 2000) it would make sense to do but i personally dont like being able to point out where my speakers are or were.
