Getting out of the military.

what step are you? There is GS-9 position in my office open right now that they want me to fill but the other 2 guys that work in my office are like you said. Basically they are military in civilian clothes, I even keep up with their training they have to do which is the same as mine. Its a GS-9 step 10 so the pay is pretty high though.
I am step 2.

thats really good pay for TN. though I am from Chattanooga, and the difference in the cost of living here in MD. and TN. is crazy.
It is, considering I am only 2 years removed from college. I am hoping to be competitive for an 11 position in 3 years or so. I am also attempting a civilian deployment.

it is a guy I was stationed with retired and got picked up right away, he opted for civilian deployment and is making about 120k in the Anbar province.

I will still be GS...just good overtime. Qatar...which isn't bad.

There are some places in Afghanistan I would go, but I don't think I have the skills for those positions.

Yes. There is good stuff about being govt now.
How do you like NSPS vs. GS?
I think GS is better than NSPS.....//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Once you learn about how NSPS really works it can screw you at times. I did 4 yrs active and 4 yrs inactive. I started out as a GS-4 and now I am a GS-6 step 7. I once was a GS-7 but took a GS-5 to be closer to home. Now some may wonder why I would take a lower grade but my pay went up going from a 7 back to a 5. My current position is a 6/7 so in the next 2 months I will be a 7 step 5 or 6.

To me it seems like the OP has some plans and a few people have supplied some great advice. I plan on sticking it out in civil service until I can retire. I love where I work and the work I do. I am a Lead Supply Technician in the Inventory Unit. SO I get nice pay to go out and count!!!!!!

Well after 7 years of being in the Navy I am planning on getting out soon. Medical problems and just being tired of always being gone have caught up to me. I am planning on staying in the same basic field just as either a contractor or civil service. Anybody ever been in the military before and got out, I am nervous as hell because its been so long since I have had a ordinary life. Wish me luck.
I did 7 years Active in the AF, got out and joined the Guard, went back to college using the MGIB and now have a good job with the federal gov't. Its tuff at first, but just stick with things and realize not everything will work out the way you want it to and go from there. I'm have no regrets except having to start at the bottom again sucks.
