gain set

you don't multiply the power of both chanels together. when you hook up the dmm to 1 of the speaker outputs, it's only putting out 125 watts not 250 watts. and he's not bridging the amp.
Doh... sorry, long day. Don't listen to me. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I set the gains accordingly and ran into some issues like most of you probably have on this. The bass is great on hip hop but when it comes to an old cd like Billy Joel the bass is barely there and there is no room to turn the bass up. I guess the only way is to set the sub amp with the ability to have some overlap, instead of doing the gain tutorial with the sub level on 15 (Alpine) do it with it set on 10 that way you have overlap. What are you guys doing on this.

I don't listen to Billy Joel much.....but is that possibly because his music simply doesn't have much bass content? And turning up the bass would be over-emphasizing the amount of bass that was intended to be there?

Yeah avs20 you probably do not have that problem with a huge ported enclosure with 2 18 inch subs 6 inches from your head. LOL

my **** mids are overpowering my subs

Yeah...and get it right..it's 8-10 inches away! LOL

Are these storebought cd's you're listening to? I find on some of my crappy mp3s the whole song sounds like crap, and there is little to no bass. Some songs simply just dont have much bass to them at all...Ive learned to avoid listening to those songs:)

They are store bought but from the 80's so the entire recording is like -6db's on some. I think that I have gotten used to adding bass to songs that do not really have it but it sounds great but you have to have an overlap on the gains. In other words it would clip the heck out of it on Rap but sound great on Billy Joel.

How are your X-overs set? I think it is most likely that the billy joel bass is more higher frequencies, and you either have them decreased through the x-over or just lack the midbass to properly reproduce them.

crossovers are both in and around 80hz, you are right about the midbass but I also have 2 tens (diamond M6's that are pretty power hungry) that are sealed and a front stage that is pretty solid. If I ported the 10's I think that would help balance things out. Like I said I'm pretty sure that I have been turning up certain songs to give them unnatural bass. II'll go back to ported and fiddle with the Xovers.
